Why should the customer be penalized if the brewer decides that they want to produce their product in an inefficient location?

Have you ever heard the phrase "Buy local?".

Why do you see it as a penalty?

Some years ago when I was at Cantillon, the beer was really cheap. Why did I have to pay a *4 mark up in the USA? They should relocate down the street from me.

I find it hilarious that tons of people have mentioned The Bruery and Nebraska, since Nebraska totally ripped off their art direction and labels (albeit poorly). Seems like they did the same with their pricing structure.

I was referring to your original statement:

"A brewery in a place like, say, Newport OR will have to have ingredients and packaging trucked in and finished products trucked out. All on 2 lane roads for a fair ways. Adds a lot of cost."

If a brewery decides to locate away from their supplies and customers (which drives up the cost of their product), that is a poor business decision.

There is a reason that several brewers are opening up new operations in markets that they sell a lot of beer.

Some breweries have been at their remote locations for a long time. Maybe they can move closer to you?

What's up with Alaskan brewing being in Alaska? Man, that is far away from most people.

Agreed. Their Imperial Russian Stout is $5.99 per 22 oz bottle here. SO overpriced!

Have never tried anything barrel aged by them. Is the barrel aging worth the extra money?

Stone six packs go for 10.99+ here in Ohio. I have never seen it priced at 7.49.

Ok, here's where I let it out, there are a few breweries that are in the Sam Adams/Sierra Nevada price range that I'm sorry deserve to be more in the Yuengling/Molson/Labatt price range and the biggest offender IMO is Leinenkugel. Is it better than macro, sure, but that's where it ends for me. There stuff is solid but very average, and in that price range SA & SN will be purchased ahead of your product for me, even up against that 6.99 set I would purchase their product...so Jake, you keep telling yourself it's "better" out here as you wander around in the woods, I'm headed to the register w/your competition.

    "Overpriced brewery", huh?

I'd say the $20,100,000,000.00 AB-InBev just paid for the half of Modelo they didn't already own strikes me as "overpriced".

But then a review of my 401k statements shows I'm not the best of judge of such things...(picking investment opportunities based on taste, as it turns out, doesn't result in optimal income).

I don't mind paying for great beer. If they use a lot of hops to make a killer DIPA, then I expect them to send it down the line. Which is what amazes me about HT and 4 pk 16 oz cans, it's cheaper than a lot of other very average brews. Perhaps their limited delivery range helps them in this regard, it has to be costly shipping beer everywhere, although SN seems to do it pretty damn well.

I would think(hope) that East End wouldn't even register on the beer geek radar anymore. Their everyday beers are very pedestrian and more often than not the yearly/specialty beers seem to have some kind of quality control problem.

??? Why do you think they're overpriced? If you only think about their barrel aged beers then no arguments, but the regular line up is priced about average in my opinion.
