It's gonna come down to an argument over perception of quality and the value placed on the attributes a beer has.

Bruery is expensive, but as someone somewhere along the line pointed out, they do make high-value beers - barrel-aging, lotsa alcohol content, etc... that being said, $30+ for a bomber is tough on the wallet.

Nebraska Brewing makes some sense, but their Hop God and Fathead are really good, high abv and go for, what? $25 - in the scheme of things, I think that the Bruery argument could apply here on a smaller scale.

Crooked Stave makes excellent beers, but $10 for a 12 oz. domestic bottle with low abv? Again, it depends on what you value.

Allagash is also pricey, but beers like Curieux and Odyssey (~$25 each) are barrel-aged and high abv.

What are you paying for Founder's? Everything in the Saint Louis metro retails for ~$9. Nine dollars for Dirty Bastard, Porter, or Centennial IPA is a good deal to me.

3Floyds. $35 for a bottle of nail polish remover and vomit named Biggs Stache. Has to be oe of the biggest swindles in craft beer history.

Some of the bombers may be pricey, but $10/6er for Zombie Dust or Alpha King is a pretty good deal.

I will add that different retailers price the same beer differently, I know I am an idiot for shopping at Whole Foods, but they have a great beer bar and a great selection of bottled beers. I have been really enjoying the recent Stone 17th Anniversary beer. well I first noticed it at my local Whole Foods and picked up a bottle for $8.99, which though a bit pricey I didn't question it until I found it at both BevMo and Total Wine for two dollars less. so Whole Foods is needlessly marking up my Stone beer by two dollars and I felt ripped off.

Speaking for MA, founders 6pks and 4ps all go for $12-15, with the most common $12.99 for 6, irrespectively of the number of beers in them. Boulevard sixes OTOH go for $10. Other than FBS, I'd rather spend my money on Boulevard 750s and 4s/6s.

I should have thought of that considering the convenience of 22 oz bottles when home brewing. Out of curiosity do you known if new breweries are then basically filling 22 oz bottles off a keg or bottle conditioning? Do they build their own makeshift assembly lines?

No idea, but I'd imagine most breweries would kraeusen or condition, considering even home-brewers do that. The comment about not being able to switch to 12-oz bottles because of costs came from the Pretty Things brewer who makes perhaps the most cost-efficient bombers, considering the content.

This one just comes down (and I'm only using your quote to aid my point - not picking at you) to economic differences, in my opinion. The average salary & cost of living are lower in St. Louis which is why things like gas, beer, etc. are less expensive. New York, Massachusetts, California, Chicago all see higher prices for these items because you make more money - relatively speaking. Everything costs more, so you get paid more (again, generally).

Looking online last night brought about a change for me...I am REALLY happy to live in St. Louis right now. Perennial, Boulevard, Founders, etc. all MUCH less expensive here than in New York - I'm talking almost half price on Perennial's stuff and $4 to $5 on most of the Boulevard & Founders.

    Blew my mind.

i have never seen Alpha king for $10 other than the brewery, as for ZD at least $12. I wouldn't but ZD anyways I'm over candy tasting APA and its proxies are cheaper anyways.

I don't know who would say Founders is overpriced, their only widely available beer I can think of that's a dollar or two overpriced is All Day IPA. If you think their overpriced it's cause the stores you visit are price gouging you. They are selling their Inspired Artist Black IPA in Michigan for 8$ a 6 pack at Meijer right now. That's an incredible deal considering the beer is 88 IBUs and 7.5% alcohol.

yeah, some of you guys are getting gouged on beer unfortunately. Stone is NOT over priced. Ballast Point is...recently Coronado is really pricey (I like the beer though). Something I've noticed though is that the most over priced beers are also the most widely available, easiest beers to get. I'm sure there is a connection.

Here in Upstate NY...Ballast Point, Bruery, Deviant Dales ($15/4 Pack, still buy it though), scored a Lunch IPA on a recent trip to Boston. 8 bucks for one, tasted great but not 8 a bottle great.

I have no problem with $12 for a good six pack of Stone, Founder's, Dog Fish, or Firestone. Especially when fresh. What I hate is when arrives already 2 months old. I would prefer if these breweries were priced more like Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, or Uinta. Green Flash, Oskar Blues, and Ballast Point.

+1. i'd go as far as saying stone may be the most relatively inexpensive beer brand on the market. $7 for an enjoy by, and $7 for a coffee added RIS... yes please
