To me, this isn't a description of "overpriced". To me, this is a description of, again, "too expensive". It depends on your personal preference that other alternatives are better options, but to me whether or not a beer is overpriced is a matter of whether you get what you pay for, to coin a phrase.

Just look at the average beer ratings for The Bruery's and Upright's portfolios. The Bruery has a 4.11 average rating for their beers, whereas Upright has a 3.99 average rating. Also in terms of place reviews, The Bruery is rated 97 (world class) compared to Upright's lower, but very respectable 89 (very good). I know this is a clunky way of illustrating it, but the point is that in the minds of the general community, the Bruery provides more benefit, both in terms of offerings and in terms of the actual location. Whether or not the higher price is proportional to the higher benefit is of debate I suppose, but the underlying concept remains.

I see your point, but in this specific case I disagree. For example, SitR with Peaches is really good, but Upright Fantasia is even better IMHO. The difference is that SitR with Peaches requires an RS membership just for the right to buy it. Comparing brewery ratings means nothing because it's aggregating a bunch of beers that are not even comparable.

I do the comparison on a beer by beer basis, and I would pick Fantasia over SitR with Peaches even if they were the same price.

OTH, something like Chocolate Rain is pretty unique. In that case, I agree it's "too expensive" rather than "overpriced" because it's hard to find an equivalent anywhere. By contrast, something like Tart of Darkness I find to massively overrated. Even though it's not directly comparable, I'd pick any Upright sour over it even if they were the same price (and they are not).

Beer by beer comparison doesn't make sense when the question is whether or not the brewery as a whole is overpriced. Yes, the brewery rating aggregates a bunch of beers, but we're talking about defining whether or not a brewery--on the whole--is overpriced.

There is also a problem with comparing something that is right in your backyard (relatively) to something that isn't. Ease of access plays a huge role in preference--I know this because I feel much the same way about Boulevard. It's natural for people to have inherent biases towards local products, and I think this is influencing your evaluation of whether or not the Bruery is overpriced.

At the end of the day, I think it should be possible to label a brewery "overpriced" or not based on it's own merits, without comparisons to the market. Overpriced, to me is a matter of what you pay for what you get, not what you pay for what you *could* get.

interesting thread. I've only had Bruery's Trade Winds Trippel...it was 8.99 at TW and one of the best belgian style ales I've ever had from anyone outside belgium. phenominal. I've not had much other of their stuff due to price, so I can't make a judgement call on them.

    I agree about budweiser. lol.

Interestingly I've found that if TW has the same beer in a bomber and a 12oz, the 12oz will be 10-30% cheaper, oz for oz, see example. [IMG]

Rogue has long been the beer people love to hate on these type threads. In these parts, Rogue 6packs are on shelves for less than four packs of brand new breweries' offerings. Some of the new breweries are good and some I wouldn't buy at half the asking price. Anchor is more than rogue. Stone IPA outprices Rogue by $2. Sculpin is nearly double.

Evil Twin, you make good beer but at world class beer prices.

The first one that comes to my mind is The Bruery but that one has already been done to death in this thread so I'll just mention a couple that nobody else has yet:

Midnight Sun Brewing Co. & Anchorage Brewing Co. -> both of which are in Anchorage Alaska. Bombers from either one cost no less than about $11 where I live and there's absolutely nothing spectacular about the liquid inside them... I just don't get it. I'll take a known fresh bottle of Simtra (because Knee Deep cares enough to put bottled on dates on their beers) for $9.99 any day over anything from either of these clowns.

The real issue is that Sculpin should be a 4 pack, plain and simple. It's literally the same price as Double Jack, which no one has an issue with (nor should they). It's absurd that it's in a 6 pack.

The expensive Bruery stuff is worth every penny, in my opinion, though PER OUNCE, there are better deals out there (Firestone Barrel stuff). Still, worth it to me. Stillwater/Evil Twin brewing in the US has cut prices wildly.

I get the negative Mikkeller vibes--pricey, turding everywhere and just not that special. Overpriced and under delivers.

Evil Twin is a bit different IMO. Two of my favorites are Molotov and Yang: serious imperials. Molotov is enormous and although it is 13%, it drinks like a giant DIPA with explosive flavors. I have not found anything quite like it. The fact that it comes in a 12oz bottle is a plus. I'll pay a little extra for something that good.

Nebraska. Some breweries are expensive and produce world class beer. Nebraska is just expensive.

Edit: Maine, Evil Twin, Mikkeller, and The Bruery all get honorable mention, but I think The Bruery actually does make some really great stuff.

4 packs of sofie and Matilda are 13 bucks...for what they are, especially Sofie at 3 bucks a bottle, and they sell 750's of most of their Belgain offerings for 8.00, again, not overpriced in any way for what it is.

Is it that The Bruery is overpriced, or you just can't afford it, there's a big difference.

I've seen one 4-pack of Ovila, the saison, I think, and it was reasonably priced. All of the rest have been larger singles, and not inexpensive at all. I've yet to be disappointed with one, but neither have I found one that matches up to a similarly-priced Trappist offering.
