To me the most overrated breweries are:

    1. Russian River (what I've had, i.e., the Belgians, PtE, Consecration)
    2. Goose Island (minus) BCBS series

    Honorable Mention: Lagunitas

Generally agree with this post (including being "unimpressed" by Bell's), but would argue Bell's isn't that highly rated here. Looked down there list of beers rated around/over 1000 times, and most seem a pedestrian 3.7-3.8.

I think every small, upstart local brewer in [insert your hometown here] is overrated. I've been to a few places where the "premier small brewer" the place has to offer ends up being just okay (at best), especially if you consider their whole lineup. I like a lot of DC/VA/MD brewers and their offerings. But most are still young and none have an across the board great lineup (DC Brau probably the closest). And despite that, I'm glad 80% of them exist .

Hands down, 3 Floyds. Yes, they make good beer but when all of their beer is vanished whenever it's sold at a store and the fact that the owners are... let's say difficult to work with and get distribution from, not to mention the ridiculousness of Dark Lord. Also, from what I understand, the owners/brewers think that they're the best around and boast themselves quite a bit. Overrated, look to different brewers.

Hands down founders. I've had a lot of their beers and I will say that FIS and KBS are pretty solid, but EVERYTHING else is just plan disappointing and overhyped.

Prairie. I keep trading to try them all and haven't had a single one that has wowed me. FGM I have yet to open.

I have to harshly disagree with anyone saying Bells or Founder's: easily my two favourite breweries. Personally I think Upland around here is criminally overrated. I don't particularly like any of their beers (Coastbuster is okay I suppose), but if you talk to people from Bloomington or Indy it's like they are the second coming or something.

I've had all of the common ones (Nelson, Exponential, PH, etc.) within 2 weeks of bottling and a few fresh on tap although I've never had Great. I think their IPA's all lack body and have overbearing onion/ditch weed notes. I like most other SoCal hoppy beers, so it isn't a regional thing. The lack of body makes that garlic/chive/cannabis thing run wild. They're like session IPA's without the "session" part.

Wow, this is an unbelievable statement:
    FBS
    KBS
    Backwoods bastard
    Harvest ale
    Double trouble
    Centennial IPA
    Imperial stout
Not to mention all of the backstage beers.
I went almost 2 weeks where all that was in my fridge was Founders and I was a happy man!

I would agree to a point with Stone, some of their stuff is just silly to me but their Enjoy By series is spot on.

Regionally in the SE, Terrapin is so over hyped it is not even funny

For me I will base it on Price. Mikkler and Eviltwin. While they has some good beers, but are way overpriced. I can find beers just as good or better for a lot less.

given that the goodness of a brewery just is whether or not people like it, overrating is literally impossible.

it's like when people get indignant because someone enjoyed a beer "just because it was rare." so is the assumption that they "didn't really" enjoy it? so they, what, hallucinated that good time they had? the raw feel of "tastes good" was somehow inauthentic because the person bought into some fantasy?

even if a brewery has little talent, or a rare beer really is nothing special for people who know better, like is like. when i enjoyed a beer, i enjoyed it, full stop--i can't be wrong about that.

Devil's Backbone. Their flagship Vienna Lager is solid, but other than that I have had nothing but mediocre.

I, too, am not a fan of Mikkeler or Evil Twin. They're overpriced and almost always underwhelming (there are exceptions, of course--especially Mikkeler).

The big brewery I always get shit for saying is overrated is Ballast Point. I've been there several times, ordered countless flights, and tried seasonal offerings, and every time I leave unsatisfied. There are many, many exceptional breweries in the area, and I seriously don't know why people waste their time at BP.

i agree that ZD is overrated, but i think FFF is still an incredibly consistent brewery. have you had arctic panzer wolf, dreadnaught, broo doo, moloko, yum yum, etc? and while ZD, and gumballhead, for that matter, may be overhyped they are solid brews. and that doesn't even cover their other really hyped beers that i haven't been fortunate enough to try, i think they do some great work over there.
