I was just doing some research and was delving into Slovenia, when an old memory popped into my brain. It was about a single beer in Austria. My best friend and I were hitchhiking south out of Munich, heading towards the old Yugoslavia. We were having a bad hot day in July, out in the middle of a beautiful nowhere, watching countless full cars laughing at us struggling down the road. Some kind samaritan dropped us off at a restaurant/bar, just off of the main road. We sat down to sausages and cold Gosser Spezial in very large mugs. That's the best beer I have ever had, future preferences be damned. How about it?

Kinda of an open ended post, so I might as well be a wise ass. My most satisfying beer [craft, of course] is one that I don't have to pay for.

I'll tell you what, a 24oz ice-cold corona hit the spot when i was at a Twins baseball game in a 120 degree heat index, otherwise, I love summit EPA as a reliable go-to for quality and satisfaction

I talk shit about Spotted Cow all the time on this site, but as far as satisfying goes (as I interpret it here) it takes a top spot: one day after working in 103 degree heat for six hours at my grandparents' farm, coming in to an ice cold Spotted Cow hit the spot like little else can. (It is also one of the few beers I prefer ice cold.)

Another pair of "most satisfying" is a different interpretation. When I finally drank Heady Topper and Black Tuesday (not in the same night), they were both easily as good (or better) than my expectations. Knowing the money I had to put into trading for them (minimal compared to some trades, but t seemed like a lot then), it's so rewarding and satisfying for a beer to exceed my expectations and make the difficulty of acquiring it more than worth it.

While in Destin Florida a couple months ago, i would wake up everymorning and go for a 3 miler on the beach. I would then enter the condo, grab a Hop Rod Rye and finish watching the sunrise on the back patio overlooking the beach.

damn. i want to go back to there

Yes, the circumstances can indeed aid in a beer being satisfying. A short story: drinking Genny Bock in a hot tub after a long day of cross country skiing in 7 degrees weather.

    The longer story below:

"So, permit me to tell a story. I was recently in Lake Placid, NY with my wife and a bunch of friends cross country skiing. My wife and I stopped at a Rite Aid to pick up some stuff. In the Rite Aid there is a beer in multiple refrigerators. While my wife pick up the needed items I briskly went to see what beer was available (the supply of homebrewed beers I brought was getting low). I spied a twelve pack of Genny Bock beer (in cans). My wife sees me take it out and immediately asked: “Why are you buying that?’ What she was really asking was: Why are you buying that crap?” I replied: “I want to try it”. She asked me several more times over the course of 2-3 minutes: “Why are you buying that (crap)?” I was actually getting a little bit irritated. I paid $6.99 for twelve beers; what a deal!! So, we went back to the house we rented. I changed into my swim trunks and took my twelve pack to the hot tub. Now, I will readily admit that Genny Bock is not a craft beer but it sure was an enjoyable beer to drink while soaking in the hot tub after an exhausting day of cross country skiing (in 7°F conditions). I would go so far as to say that if somebody is exhausted from cross country skiing and soaking in a hot tub that Genny Bock is the perfect beer for that exact situation.

Several other of the people in the hot tub tried the Genny Bock and they enjoyed drinking it. My wife did not drink a single Genny Bock (she only drank my homebrewed beers)."

    Cheers!

Not the best tasting beer by any means, but every 2 years, my Dad, brother and I take a canoe/camping trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Northern Minnesota for a week. We are basically in the middle of nowhere, with virtually no contact with the human world and drinking filtered, warm lake water for a week. Sweating our asses off the whole week, from canoeing upwards of 10-15 miles a day and portaging all of our gear from lake to lake before finding a camping spot.

At the end of the week, we return to civilization and the outfitters that dropped us off at our starting location are there to pick us up. They always have ice cold Hamm's, which is the most glorious and refreshing thing you'll ever taste at 9:00am in the morning after spending a week drinking nothing but warm lake water.

I would have to say that being very far from the best beer I have ever had, the most satisfying beer would be the first of a two beer ration that I was entitled too, after spending 90 consecutive days at sea, in the Indian Ocean [Damn can it get hot there] aboard an Aircraft Carrier. That was some 33 years ago, and I don't think I will ever have another beer that was that satisfying.

In my 20s, some friends and I had a 'ride from hell' on the way from Long Island to Vermont, traffic-wise- accidents, construction, volume, it never let up. Ugh- it took us like 3 extra hours, all the while saying "it'll get better once we're out of the city", "it'll get better once we're out of CT", etc...Eventually it was just "I need a beer!".

Once we hit town, we found a place to shake off the jitters and finally relax, but the best beer they had was draught Heineken. And it was fantastic- so fresh and clean tasting, too, and definitely did the job. Great food, great atmosphere. Best Heine I even had, and I didn't even know it could taste so good. I don't think it has tasted as good after that either- maybe we just hit upon a magic keg

I went from Ghent to the Westvleteren monastery (my second trip there) on a record heat day in mid-June 2011. There were actually news stories about people waiting at train stations in Bruges passing out from the heat, and train station employees started handing out free water.

Boy oh boy did Westvleteren Blonde taste great once I finally made it.

SN Pale Ale straight from the can (come at me) right after I get home from a long day of working outside in the AZ summer heat. I would say there are better beers, but not much can top that level of satisfaction : )
