Spaten Optimator - it's probably not underrated but it seems like the IPAs and DIPAs get all the hype, and people have forgotten about the malty beery goodness of Doppelbock and the like. It's getting cooler in the Northeast bring on the Oktoberfest and malty beers!

Spaten 'anything', really, but to me they show just how good a beer can be made in a facility that huge.

    Coors or Rolling Rock.

It's hard to beat those after a bike ride on a hot day.

Also, Lucky Bucket in general (from LaVista, NE) does not get very much love. Pretty much all of their beers I've tried have been between great and excellent, but you won't find anything above an 83 overall score on any of their beers.

    Keesmann Herren Pils.

While it has massive scores, one that always surprises me how little attention it gets is De Dolle Stille Nacht. It's a "forgotten" world class beer.

Seconding White Rajah. What a phenomenal IPA! The ONLY hoppy beer I currently prefer is Founder's reDANKulous, until it's gone anyway....

Abita Amber and Turbodog. Also their Grapefruit ipa was great, but completely overshadowed by Sculpin Grapefruit

    OG Flag Porter

Orval (to a degree, I feel that it's a better/more interesting beer than many of the more talked about and praised Trappist brews)

    Ommegang Rare Vos

    Black Xantus

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I simply do not understand why Ballast Point's Indra Kunindra doesn't get more love. Is the flavor profile just too weird for some people? I'd take it over most of the spiced stouts out there getting much higher scores (Abraxas, Mexican Cake, etc.).

I'd also add 2 underrated beers from what I generally find to be an overrated brewery: Dogfish Head's Indian Brown Ale and Palo Santo Marron. Also would agree with the general sentiment that Ommegang doesn't get the love they deserve.

Left Hand Fade to Black is in no way overrated, in the sense that it has great reviews, but it is not a beer I ever see on the WAYD threads, or mentioned in favorite stout threads.

I haven't tried enough beers overall to have any reasonable sense of saying what the most underrated beer could possible be, but personally I really enjoy 2 certain beers that only have mediocre ratings.

One was Brick Waterloo Dark — I like the very sweet and malty taste. It's also a low price. Many people might consider one or all of those traits to be signs of junk beer but I disagree.

The other is Faxe Royal strong. Aside from the high ABV which I really like, the low cost which I like, there is a very nice "melody" of flavors going on: a nice —but mild— hops taste, a somewhat hidden/mild —but great— yeast flavor, plus a noticeable alcohol taste, and a mild malt taste. No fancy descriptions for the flavors (such as "an old man's leather shoe that has 3 fresh apricots smushed into it"), but I would say they are probably there, I just can't describe them.

These are just my personal tastes though, and the key thing to note is that different people have different taste preferences. I'm also curious to know how different people's taste sensitivity (super taster vs medium or low taster) affects people's preferences in different beers.

I'm a strong believer that peer "pressure" (it's not really pressure in this case. Perhaps there's another name for it), price, and other factors (ingredients, description) result in a placebo effect which has a significant impact on a person's perception of what a beer tastes like, or how much they enjoy it. I personally believe that my bias from such things is minor, although I still have my personal taste preferences.

That sounds amazing. Can you elaborate on the "over-sweetened, super fruity beers" part? (I haven't heard anything about them, nor tried their stuff, and don't think I have any access to it either) are you talking about radlers? I seem to hate radlers. They taste like soda pop rather than beer. I don't mind sweet or fruity beers that aren't overtly "radlery" though.

Edit from previous post (I guess I have very little time to edit posts): Uhh but on BA, that has a 91% rating. How is that possibly considered to be underrated? Sure it isn't 100%, but really 91% is still excellent; to me it seems somewhat like splitting hairs. I'm a fan of Belgian stuff, geuze, kriek, and wild/brett stuff, but I rarely ever have any access to it, or when it do it's pretty expensive.

I had one a few nights ago for the first time in several years. It really is a great beer. I tend to prefer Celebrator or Andechs, but I saw the Optimator in the mix-a-six selection at my local Wegmans, so I figured I'd revisit it. There was a time, before craft beer really took off, when it was one of the best beers you could get in Disney World. As my wife's family are Disney fanatics, I definitely drank my share at German Biergarten. Unfortunately, Spaten-Franziskaner has been replaced there by the likes of Radeberger and Schofferhofer.

ommegang scythe & sickle is also an underrated fall beer with all the attention that the pumpkin slop gets these days
