    Hey folks!

So, I'm on the fence...I'm considering taking a ride to ME. Maybe.

On one hand, It's a hike and I have to work in the PM so it's a bit of a pain. It's also $16/btl. Ouch.

On the other hand, I really like a good dark beer and I've never had Mott before.

For those who have had it - is it significantly better than the other good stouts that crop up here from time to time (Trillium Night & Day, N.S. Darkling, etc?)

Also, is this like a TH Good Morning/MBC Dinner/limited release that means you have to be there silly-early?

Any help would be appreciated!

IMO - it's a delicious beer that is a real treat and worth the money. Many people show up a few hours early and wait through long lines. If you show up mid-afternoon, the lines are much shorter and there are still bottles and draft pours available

It's good. Whether or not it is worth a trip and the money is up to you. For me it's not. MtL has never lived up to the beer it is firmly in the shadow of. I wish the the best for Mott but its seems to just be a story of nether side (Mott or Portsmouth) making out well in the split.

The brew is fantastic. Unless you have had King Henry or Kate the Great (I haven't), my guess is that it is Tod as his best.

B1 was unreal good on tap but my bottle was only decent (took me 5 months to get around to it though). It's worth it, but not worth it to get it and sit on it imo.

It's delicious and worth the time and money. It's not KtG, but a complex beer nonetheless. I agree with getting there later in the afternoon (2-3pm onward). No need to get there early in the morning.

I think Alfred, Lord Tickerson had a similar situation once. Although ending up being slightly disappointed with the beer, he wrote in his review "'Tis better to have drank and lost, Than never to have drank at all".

How similar is this brew to KtG?

EDIT: Not KH but Royal Impy. Temporary whale brain lapse. My apologies.

Definitely good, although I;ve never had either KtG or any of the treehouse stouts. Is it worth the drive and hassle? Up to you, I'm only going because the wife and I are heading out to dinner in Portsmouth. Also, at the release earlier this year the bottles lasted until Sunday and it remained on draft I believe until Thursday.

To be fair, he did call the beer, "Mott the LESSER".

Having had plenty of Kate and Royal Impy, I personally don't believe MtL lives up to either. It's good, yes, but not worth $16/bottle or $8/8oz draft, in my opinion.

    Prosit!

The base beer is essentially the same. I had un-oaked KTG numerous times and it was amazing to me how frigging smooth it is. I've only had the first batch and it was incredible, but still very refined like KTG. All of the big stouts now are just loaded with layers of coffee and vanilla and maple etc. KTG was never a Port-bomb, and Mott is the same way. I love it.

Mott is a delicious, complex brew and worth it in my opinion.

Will it blow you away? Who knows, but it's def. a treat.
Far better than Night and Day, or Darkling. Just my two cents.

    Cheers

It's been a long time since Kate the Great was brewed so it's hard, at least for me, to compare. Kate was one of the first cult beers in New England (outside of VT) so I think that notoriety helped boost the taste.

That said, I remember absolutely loving Kate...syrupy, thick, smooth. Since 2010 beer has changed a lot...we've all had such amazing breweries open in that time. Could Kate still hold up? I honestly don't know...I wish I could have a bottle that wasn't 5 years old at this point and find out.

Mott is a very nice stout, far and away the best thing Tributary does, but I don't think I'll pay the premium for it again.

If you're a huge stout fan I'd say it's definitely worth at least one trip.

Also agree about the Todd/Portsmouth breakup...sad to see a pretty good place splinter into two OK places.

Neither Impy or Mott were or are Kate.

    Mott<Impy<Kate

The nostalgia creates the line for Mott up here. All three are great beers but Kate was something on a little bit higher of a level.

I've been to 2 of the releases and am planning on going Saturday. As much for the fun as anything. It's been very good on tap, but not quite so much in the bottle - in talking to Tod last time, he said that it may take a year or 2 in the bottle to settle down and mellow a bit. It should last and age well for a long time, he says.

    Agreed,

But the B1 bottles and draft for that matter were watery and just not good at all. Way too thin for a RIS. B2 was far better

If this is true, I'll probably swing up on Sunday in the hopes there's no line!

Kind of surprised at all the love for Impy. I liked it, it's a solid BA stout, but kind of one note and thin to me. I have a bottle aging from the last release so we'll see how it does over time.
