I don't remember it changing the taste of any of my beers, but back when I had a beard I was forever getting foam in my hairlip. One moment I looked violently rabid and the next I looked as if I was spasmodically trying to swallow my upper lip in an attempt to get at the foam.

Beer drinking is easier without the fur. But hang in there through February!

I don't even know where to begin with this. All I can suggest is just trim your mustache short enough where the hair doesn't drop past the the upper portion of your lip.

I have had a full beard for over 5 years now and have not noticed this happening. If have a big thick stout and I take big sips my moustache can get sticky, but water will take care of that issue in less than 30 seconds.

I am a dedicated moustache-eer. I have had one in one form or another since I was 14, and that is a long time ago.

I am so dedicated, that even when I couldn't really grow an actual proper moustache, I just rocked what I had, which was basically something that looked like four mosquitoes got swatted on my upper lip. I am so dedicated that I had a moustache when I was in the National Guard waaaaay back around the Civil War sometime, even though they had all these rules about what one could look like, which in brief was seriously not cool, and no other facial hair at all was allowed to go with it. Oh, well - I would rather have a BAD moustache than none at all.

As soon as I got out of all that rigamarole, I grew a big beard and long hair. I got sick of both promptly, and then shaved down to the Van **** I have had since 1992.

My wife of 17 years has never seen me in person without it, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to at this point. My 13-year-old son would not know me without it.

I have been drinking beer for just about exactly as long as I have had a moustache, and porters / stouts have been a favorite of mine for many years.

All that established, I have never heard of this. Ever. Not even once, until today.

I've let my beard and mustache go for the past year plus. Maybe I make a point to sip with my mouth open a little wider to avoid getting my mustache wet, but I've never had a beer taste different because of my mustache (unless there's some lingering beer in there and I accidentally sip that ). When I smell a beer though, I definitely plant the area between the base of my septum and the top of my mustache pretty firmly on the rim of my glass to try and create as much of a barrier as possible between beer's aroma and my mustache's.

Now I feel like a freak. And porters great. He's 3 and he insists on sticking q finger in and tasting EVERY beer I drink. Much like his old man, there are very few he doesn't like.

I figured it out. The OP is drinking all of his porters and stouts from cans. lol. Nothing to do with moustache.

I've had facial hair since '97, before it was cool. Never had this issue before.

People thought I was a straight-up freak for having a beard in 1991. "Ooookaaaay, Grizzly Adams, what exactly are you trying to prove?" On my softball team, I was routinely referred to as "Mr. Aguilera". (Minnesota Twins joke).

The Van **** from '92 onwards didn't fare much better, until relatively recent times. These are golden days in more than one respect.

Although, sometime around 2000, I did get a little weary of the full Van ****, so I shaved the chin part, leaving a relatively florid full Fu Manchu and a soul patch. At a store, Christmas shopping, a youngster said "Excuse me, sir . . . " I said, warily, "Yes?" He just shook his head and said "My God, the POWER of that moustache . . . . " I replied "Yes, it DOES have power, and you don't want to forget it. Merry Christmas."

Again, with all that facial hair experience, I have had a porter taste like metal exactly zero times.

I had a moustache for more than 30 years, it never had any affect on my beer. After I shaved it, there was still no affect on my beer. But hair does hold odor and bacteria, so I'm not going to say it's all in your head. Perhaps you are dunking your stache into the beer.

There are two things that must be taken into account here. First, the importance of proving your wife and offspring wrong. Second, the importance of enjoying your beer. Consider getting a glass that has a moustache guard, or, use a straw.

My moustache has only served to enhance the experience. Particularly when taking in the aroma of a beer in a glass. The moustache keeps the lip warm whilst allowing the rim of the glass to rest firmly below the septum.

Maybe you have a lot of iron in your diet and as a result in your face follicles?

This thread however, is far and away, the best I have ever seen... keg stand tastes like asparagus... made my day.

This is what I do. I've had a beard for 10 years, but I always trim the hair away from the lip. Beer doesn't even touch unless it's a Guinness or something.
