I'm relocating across the country for work. My employer is coordinating my move but I've run into a problem with the moving company they use, they don't ship alcohol. I have about 40 cases of beer and about 6 cases of liquor. I'm flying, not driving so taking the collection myself isn't going to work. I've started looking into wine relocation companies but haven't found much in the way of good options for beer yet. I'm sure some of you must have run into this situation before, if you have any solutions or recommendations for how to move everything safely and for a reasonable price I would greatly appreciate the help.
I don't suppose packing everything nice and tight and labeling it, "fine china" or some such would work with the moving company? I guess the only way would be to pack it up and ship to yourself via UPS, FedEx or mail (yes, they *officially* don't ship alcohol either, but a quick spin through the trade forums show you shipping is alive and well. I would probably say that the best of the best you can pack into your luggage you're flying with. I would also contact the wine relocation companies and explain your situation, see if they can help. Worst case, you have some great gifts for people. And a hell of a farewell party.
My Wife and I both work in Hospitality and have the same arrangement with the company we work for. When we moved from CO to MD I ended up having to drive due to pets and alcohol so I understand your predicament. Are the companies that relocate wine unwilling to work with beer or just too outrageously expensive? Where are you moving from/to?
This is my vote too. Call around to local bottle shops and see if any of them are willing to donate you some empty liquor/wine boxes. Pack em up good, label them "FRAGILE-GLASS", and call it good. Exactly.
I had no problems with movers as long as they don't know what it is. I would suggest using hard totes so if it leaks it will be self contained.
I had the same issue with my cross country move- they also don't to firearms and ammo, fireworks, nor gas. Easy solution: get the large boxes (or XL?) and pack your cases in those, I think I fit 2-3 cases per. A lil extra cash upfront, but everything lands together and the extra cushion adds peice of mind when you know those movers are intentionally putting all "fragile" labeled boxes on the bottom of the heap lol. Didn't lose a bottle down not back. Also got my guns down there as "hunting supplies". Cmon man, didn't you cut your beer dishonesty teeth on beer trading yet? ("What's in the box? Uh, marinades. I would never ship beer. Those people are sinners").
