I'll be heading to Chicago for a full time position in early 2013 from Richmond VA (home of Hardywood). I worked in Chicago for 8 months in 2011 and 2012, so I am familiar with the area and bars. Not sure what part of town I'll be living in yet. I've been collecting and cellaring beer for a few years and have a 750 bottle cellar (of which I will need to thin out a bit before I move). I also run a non-profit in Richmond called Screens 'n' Suds, which curates beer inspired screen prints, sells the art, and donates the money to charity. I had to start a new BA account because my account got jammed up, but I've been a member for several years.

    - Looking for recommendations on social media avenues to hear about craft beer events. I am already part of the CBS listserv and the Beer.Good. meet-up site. Also, are there any other Facebook Chicago beer sites, I should know about.
    - If anyone has any room in their tasting groups, I'd love to join a new one.
    - If anyone has any suggestions on events to get my non-profit involved with please let me know.

Shoot me a message if you have any tips or suggestions.

    Cheers,
    Ric

I'm in the same boat. Just got here last week. I live in the wicker park area and could use some help with going ons in the area. Have visited a couple times but nothing more than a couple weekends.

Things to do to get integrated into the Chicago beer culture:

-Have an unrelenting love for Vav and all Vav related activities
    -Drink malt liquor with Masterski
-Learn delivery routes so you can follow trucks to every store
    -High five Nate Nelson
    -Blackout at FOBAB
-Make stupid jokes about Three Floyd's burning down and bitch about the cost of their beer despite buying it every time you go there (which is typically once a week)
-Go to every West Lakeview party

Follow all the Facebook pages / Twitter accounts of the bars you like. Fountainhead/Northdown/Sheffield's/Local Option always post a ton of events that they have.

There are some good users in the Great Lakes forum to follow if you want to know about special tappings (without knowing where they are...).

Naperville Ale Fest is a new fest trying to get started up benefiting charities and a good environment for fests. May need some help.

on beer groups, where are you living? DT? west side, north side? Area will help. You dont want to travel too far for a beer drinking group, and dont need to usually in Chicago.. cheers and welcome!

buzze, No clue yet on where I will live. I am leaning towards starting to look around Roscoe or West Loop.

Jegross, I am familar with beermenus.com (great resource when kept up to date). What is Chicago Craft Beer Lovers Group?

I have been meaning to finagle a time to swig a 40 or two with Masterski...but I doubt I could come up with a malt he hasn't yet had...

once you hit the ground just look around and find your local beer bars and brewpubs. Familiar with beer mapping project? check out chicago beer map after you get a place (or even better to help choose) and you will quickly find your neighborhood craft beer gang. They are everywhere. So much beer, so little time.

Hey, I never blacked out at FOBAB. I thought I did, but then I saw the pictures.... yes, FOBAB is a requirement if you really want to live a true "Hangover" evening.

I found a place over by Bucktown by North and Western. Google Maps say I will be 449 feet from Pipeworks Brewing Company.
