Hey All. I currently in Southern California, but will be moving to Freiburg for a year starting in August. How is Freiburg as a beer community? I will be visiting in April, and would love suggestions for bottle shops and pubs. Also, I would be happy to set up some IP trades with California beer when I arrive (either in April or August).

Nice place, not really known for it's beer.

It's a long time since I was last there, but I'm sure you'll find a bottle shop somewhere. Being a student town, there will be lots of pubs and bars around.

I was there in November. Lovely city.

Beer wise it's ok. Plenty Rothaus available and I loved the brew pub Feirlieng (sp) and their beer and food. Less so Martins Brau pub.

Sunniest place in Germany I think from memory.

Been there a couple of times but was a while ago, so I can't help with bier... But it is a lovely city, and close to other picturesque places like Triberg (nice cascading waterfall) and Villingen-Schwenningen - old hal-timbered town.... Right in the Schwarzwald as well...

    Enjoy! Prosit!

Good news is you are near the alps. Bad news is, that puts you further from Belgium...

We stayed near there once while skiing in the area. But I can't speak to the beer scene there. Being in Germany, it won't be hard to find beer. But you will have to dig in pretty deep to find craft stuff.

    France isn't too far...

We went to see FC Freiburg v Leipzig and ended in Markethalle on the Saturday afternoon/night and it was a super night.

Alright, sounds like I will be traveling a bit on some beer excursions. However, I can't wait to live there as I have heard amazing things about Freiburg!

A quick search of this site helps:

According to this map, there's a craft beer store, and some interesting brewers I'd not known about. But this map isn't comprehensive, for it's missing at least 1 Craft Beer bar in FFM: Naïv.

Not sure why BA won't allow me to add pics any more... can anyone help? Or am I missing something by simply posting the link?

Tony, I use photobucket as my photograph web hosting site and I do a copy & paste to place photographs in posts; like above.

    Cheers!

This Belgian resides there, about 500m distance from 3 breweries in the city centre...feel free to contact me when you arrive!

Apart from 2 very local Hausbraueien (Martin's Bräu and Feierling) who do prime examples of what I've begun calling SW Kellerbier there is 1 bigger supraregional so-so brewery Ganter who have their Doppelbock Wodan in the 1001BeersYouMusttry... book.

Craft beer scene is small, and US-style-centered for now, but very lively within the Land of BW considering the city's size: look out for especially Braukollektiv for spot-on APA/IPA, Malt&Hops and Emma Biere. Also look out for a champagne beer called SchwarzwaldGold Coco d'or and Weizenbock Tripel.

Further away & worth it for hoppy Lager/Keller styles: Waldhaus, Rothaus, Lenzkirch (hub for ****oo brewers), Elzach for their prime Löwen-Pils. The latter one can be supreme and very cheap at about €14/case.

Also 2 relatively new craft beer stores in the centre of town.

Also I sometimes organise tastings including rare Belgians...Planning more saison & geuze tastings in summer. Would be happy to fill you in on the local scene.

Hi, what are some of the better bars in the city to try stuff from Braukollektiv, Emma Biere, Waldhaus, Rothaus, etc.?

Try Schlappen and Café Atlantik for the regional basics from tap and the newer crafties bottled. Quite a few regular Kneipen have Rothaus or Waldhaus on tap.

Newer craft seldom surfaces on tap outside of festivals due to a severe tied house culture, but I hope that's going to change soon. Try Café Ruef (Waldhaus, Braukollektiv), Eimer Bar, Café Pow and let them know (also for me) that you appreciate your locals from tap!
