Next week I am moving to Mount Pleasant from Waco, TX. I see there are two breweries there but that's about all I know about them. How are beer stores there? Any BAs in town?

My wife is from GR and I've spent a lot of time there and even lived there for a bit so I know a lot about the beer scene there but nothing about MP. Thanks!

Take a 2 hour ride up to Shorts Brewpub in Belleaire. It rocks!!!! It's definitely worth the drive!! They have so many outstanding beers on tap. Do to forget to bring your growlers. And pick up a sixer of Stache Bender if they have any left. You won't be sorry!

I've got three words for you: Fire. Up. Chips. Now that's out of the way, Mt. Pleasant brewing co is a nice little brewery to have in the city. Most of the party stores cater to the college kids but there are a few with some decent selections. Most notably, old mission. ToDblDs had mix and match 6 packs with some variety too.

Would recommend Old Mission Party Store. Good but not huge selection, singles, good prices.

Enjoy Mt. Pleasant! Awesome casino, tons of bars, division 1 sports, tons of golf, and around a 2 hour drive to shorts (Bellaire) or Founders (GR). I dont live there anymore, but miss all it had to offer with a small town feel.

The two breweries that are there have decent beers, and sometimes some that are very notable. A third brewery is on its way (Cranker's) that also has put out decent beers at their other location. Being centrally located in the state you'll have the opportunity for relatively road trips to many Michigan breweries.

Question about the two Mt. Pleasant breweries. Why do they sell some of the same beers? Are they joint owned?

Enjoy Mt. Pleasant, the brewery puts out some great beers and like others have said you are 2 - 3 hours from any beer destination in the state which makes great for some overnight trips. It's a beautiful area up there with lots to do year round.

I've spent some time working on Mount Pleasant BA visibility. I added probably over half the Places on the Mount Pleasant page in the last six months, and I opened this thread a while back (to little avail). Here's my two cents on the beer scene:

First, Mt Pleasant Brewing Company, in my opinion, makes 1 good beer for every 10 they produce. It's just my opinion, but I don't think their beer is that great. I love going to the brewpub, great people, good food, fun atmosphere (especially in the summer), lots of variety, new beers all the time, so it's definitely worth it to go. The beer, though, eh...

For beer bars, Hunter's Ale House is probably your best bet in terms of selection. Some noteworthy things that were on tap this year include Short's Bourbon Wizard, Hopslam (for months), and KBS. Luckily, the demand for such beers isn't super high in Mount Pleasant, so the kegs tend not to blow in twenty minutes like they would in Grand Rapids or Detroit. The pizza at Hunter's, especially the thin crust, is also fantastic.

Other great bars include The Bird, which always has eight MI beers on tap, one of which is guaranteed to be tap-only (Perrin, for example). The Brass has a decent selection of bottled beer, especially imports, but they keep their five or six tap lines pretty much devoted to solid Michigan beers -- again, they tend not to tap things like Two Hearted and instead focus on limited releases from Greenbush or Short's.

For stores, you pretty much have to go to four or five locations to really maximize your selection. If you tend to favor imports, Old Mission is your best bet. Old Mission also has the biggest bomber selection in town, and they'll occasionally land an extra case of something like a Backstage release. Their singles are also pretty extensive, but overpriced.

My personal favorite store is The Store in the Stadium Mall. I've developed a rapport with the owners, so they tip me off on new Short's releases and when they get things like Black Note and BCBS in stock (one or two cases of the good stuff, max, which is true of just about everywhere in Mount Pleasant). You can also mix-and-match just about every beer in The Store, but you have to ask if it's not already broken down. This may not sound that cool, but when you don't want the entire Short's or Dark Horse variety pack, they will gladly break it down for you.

Every other store in Mount Pleasant has something to offer, however. K&S tends to keep their limited releases for longer than others (probably because they cost a dollar or two more than other places); Triple Deuce hides some of their best beer in their cooler; Ric's gets some Short's releases and Enjoy By on the reg; Meijer just put in a singles section and they have variety packs (like the Stone IPAs one) that others don't get. So, like I said, you really need to get around if you want to maximize your selection.

Mount Pleasant also has some fun fishing spots, a pretty extensive park system, a huge casino (if you're into that), college sports, and, as others have said, is only an hour or two from just about everywhere in the state. Enjoy yourself there. BM me if you want to meet up for a beer sometime! Ride the Lion just came in down in Lansing, so I'm looking for someone to share my bottle with. Cheers!

Wow, great info! Here in Waco it's kind of the same where I go to multiple stores to get what I need. Same with the one good pub here, really limited stuff doesn't disappear in 30 minutes. It also sounds a lot better than Waco. Metro population of 235,000 and not a single brewery, only two good places to get beer from, and one good pub. Almost all of the restaurants only serve BMC beers and Shiner too. Although, I'll miss going to Baylor football games. My wife will actually be working for CMU as a residence hall director so I'll be living on campus in a faculty apartment.

I'm also much more interested in those bars that have a variety of beers from different breweries than the actual breweries themselves there. I'll still go to them, but I'm sure I'll be at the bars more. I rarely buy six packs as I get tired of most beers after 3-4 of them so the singles selection is huge for me.

We should definitely meet up. I've got a little more than a case of Jester King sours I'm bringing with me to share among a few other Texas beers.

Sounds great! I've only ever had Atrial...yum. Just like raspberry jam. FYI MMMKay should be out today. Call The Store and see if they got their allocation.

Oh, by the way, you have to like Short's if you live in Michigan. Just one of our few rules!
