I apologize if this thread has been made recently, but I could not find it via search.

I was wondering if any of you had any insight on particular beers that can remain in the cellar for many, many years while only getting 'better'. I know 120 can age for 10+ years, and a few of my Bruery's say 'age well for decades' on the back, but do you have any other particular beers that you have either had, or heard about remaining in the cellar for decades?

I've never understood that claim considering The Bruery was founded 7 years ago.

Chimay blue is always a solid one for the cellar, plus they have the benefit of being incredibly established, so long term verticals are always a possibility. Many sours are also cellar worthy for a few decades, getting better and better. If they bring back Thomas Hardy or you can find some, they are good for near 30 years. In general, the higher the ABV the better. Barley wines, RIS, Belgians, Sours... these are the most cellar worthy. Hope this helps.

The more I play with aging beer, the more I realize very little of it gets better with age. Some notes I've jotted down:

    Good for Aging
    • High ABV
    • Malt-forward
    • Traditional styles (old ale, English barleywine, geuze, strong ale, etc.)
    Bad for Aging
    • Low ABV
    • Hop-forward
    • Flavored with adjuncts (fruit, coffee, spices, etc.)
    • New-ish styles
These are just general guidelines; some beers break these trends. Like, geuzes tend to be lower ABV but hold out decently well. Even so, they generally taste "brighter" fresh and more funky/muted later on.

Awesome!! Thank you very much for the recommendations as well as some of your insight as to aging certain beers. I just picked up Vintage Beer by Patrick Dawson and that has been incredibly helpful as well.

    Cheers!

The people who own the Bruery are a bunch of arrogant ________. Just look at their prices, not surprised their making claims they shouldn't. Expedition Stout from Bells is reasonably priced and has a proven track record for aging.
