Sly Fox doesn't distribute theirs anymore unfortunately but I do see it occasionally on tap in their brewpubs. I know that this doesn't help you out much, OP, but figured I would mention it for anyone that would be interested.

I like Von Trapp's. It's a style I have not seen or had much within the last seven years or so, it's unfortunate and another victim to the IPA trend.

I like these as well, especially during the beginning of fall.

Von Trapp Dunkel is regularly available at Kunda Beverage; they have two six-packs in stock right now:

    “Von Trapp Dunkel Lgr 12oz C 6P 6 Pack 12 Oz. Cans 10.99 2”

    http://kundabev.com/stocklist

I recall from earlier discussions that you prefer to not shop at Retail Beer Distributors but the advantage of those businesses is that they keep a lot of beer in stock. Much better selection as compared to retailers like Wegman’s or Giant or…

    Cheers!

Thank you! I've had VT's a few times now and it's solid. And good point for sure but the flip side is that sometimes distributors have a ton of old crap laying around.

It is indeed an imperfect world we live it.

Imported my favorite is Weltenburger Dunkel. Locally I like Neshaminy Creek Dunks Ferry it’s a fall seasonal I believe.

If you are close to jersey and don’t mind a $4 bridge toll the Roger Wilco in Pennsauken and in palmyra a minute over the bridge each have von trapp always.

I think von Trapp is easily the best American version I’ve had, but not many to compare.

Question. With Modelo being a Vienna style (not getting into the if it’s good or not aspect) is Negro a Dunkel to everyone here?

But that beer is a Dunkelweizen vs. a Munich Dunkel. As described on BA:

"We stay with the German wheat beer theme for our Fall seasonal, and much like it’s Summertime sister, Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen has a unique banana and spicy clove character but this time paired with a chewy, bready (dare we say banana bread) malt backbone. Again, we hop this German wheat beer with Hallertau and Tettnanger hops."

    Cheers!

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Augustiner Dunkel, it's the best of the Big 6 Dunkels in my humble opinion.

Unfortunately that one's not exported to the US.

I don't think it's available on this side of the "deep dark."

It might be different in other parts of the country, but out here the only ones I ever see are Ayinger and Weltenburger. Both are fantastic, although their freshness levels can be spotty.
Hofbrau's is a little less rich if you have access to that one. I haven't seen it lately, but it's less bold but more drinkable than those two. I don't even know the last time I even saw another imported example.

My only problem with Ayinger's Dunkel is finding it fresh. It's one of those shelf-sitters around here.

Noticing your location, OP, I believe you would not be able to try this without a trade, but Metropolitan Brwy.'s Arc Welder Rye pretty much nails the style. Chicago's water table (as annotated by Randy Mosher) is very close to that of Munich's.

Penn Dark and Pious Monk Dunkel out of Pittsburgh are good representations of the style.

You reply to the wrong post? I'm not the OP and you can find my review of Arc Welder under my beer list.

Apologies, I guess I've never reviewed Arc Welder, but I know I've had it a few times -- still like Dorfbier better.
