Hey all...My wife and I are thinking about inviting a group of American friends to Oktoberfest 2027 and it could be a larger group (12-14 people). I lived in Munich 96-98 and have been many times to Oktoberfest but not recently so I'm looking for hotels in or around Munich you might recommend for such a trip. We're looking at 3-4 days (Sun-Thur) end of September and interested in places close to U or S Bahn that would 1) book early and 2) handle pre booking 6-7 rooms. Thoughts? Ideas?
I went back to Oktoberfest a few years ago. We booked at the Moxy (a Marriott property) at Grafinger Str. 7, 81671 München, Germany. It is a short walk to the station to catch trains and Ubahns. If I recall correctly, it was about a 15 minute ride to the festival grounds. It has a bar & restaurant on-stie and a nice patio. It is Moxy so expect smaller, spartan rooms with a modern style. We had a group of 8 and everyone was fine with the accommodations. I believe it is kind of an up-and-coming neighborhood and there was even a few craft beer options close by.
Over the past couple of decades we have stayed at the: ibis Muenchen City Arnulfpark, Arnulfstrasse 55. Short walk to the Tram lines 16 & 17, which provide convenient connections to other city trams, buses, U&S trains and Munich Hbf. Close to Augustinerkeller (two tram stops). Basic, modern style lodging. King's Hotel First Class, Dachauer Str. 13 & King's Hotel Center München, Marsstraße 15. Both of the King's Hotels are close to the Hbf. Their dynamic pricing models can send rates sky high but also provide affordable central lodging. The above locations do have a bar and lobby area and offer a breakfast option.
On our trip last Fall we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and were comfortable. I think it was only one or two stops away on the S-bahn from the festival grounds. And it was only a 15 minute walk thru the woods to the Augustiner Biergarten in Hirschgarten Park.
I'm a big fan of the hotels around Rosenheimer Platz. That's the neighborhood with the Gasteig and Deutsches Museum. The obvious options for most Americans are the Hilton Munich City and the Holiday Inn Munich City Centre. There's a Novotel and a Hotel One right there, too. I've done both the Hilton and Holiday Inn and would recommend them to anyone. Go with whichever one matches your budget/tastes. The S-Bahn is literally in your basement, and there are a pair of grocery stores (including one with a pretty decent beer aisle) connected to it as well. There's a tram stop across the street and you can walk to the Ostbahnhof DB station if you need. There's even a hospital right there in a pinch. There a bunch of hiking trails that lead to the Englischer Garten and it's a pretty hip neighborhood in general. Lots of restaurants, bars, and activity.
