A decent palate and a sensitivity to it I suppose. I'm not a judge, but I've been through multiple flavor profile and off-note seminars.
It wasn't exactly one of those beers that smells like a cheap theater from a foot away, but there was a little on the nose. Definitely on the back of the tongue. Not strong, but unlikely to be melanoidin and such. Telltale slickness on the roof of the mouth sealed the deal.

I've been there 4 times and either the Braunbier or Gold Pils has had it 2 of those times. The other two times I've sworn KB might be my favorite brewery in town. Never had any issues with the Schwarz, though. It was great this time, too.

Where was said Volkfest? Sounds like one to keep an eye out for next year.

I want to try to hit the Petrifying Springs Biergarten (H-P) in Kenosha for their Oktoberfest this year.
Time to update your profile?

I love Klosterbrau as well, usually a first stop on my rolling walk through town ending up in Mahr Brau before catching a bus(s) to the train station. Love the Schwärzla and oftentimes the Bockbier. Next year we will be spending the night so hope to indulge in a couple of new pubs in addition to my steady four.

    Thank you for the lesson!

Man -- dead center of state... and a little beyond my day trip range. Congrats on the raffle.

A couple more notes before I have to get back to work:

    1. The beers from Salzburg were fantastic this time. Not being rushed probably helped. Both the Augustiner Mulln and even just normal 'ol Stiegl Gold were just as good as the beers a few hours west. Cheaper, too.

    2. The new Andechser Am Dom location is right beside Augustiner Am Dom and the menu hasn't changed. Since there is way more seating available, you no longer have to pounce on open tables/seats.

    3. Both the Andechs and the Ayinger Alcoholfrei beers actually taste pretty close to normal beers. They're definitely drier than most others I've had. While still sweet, they aren't cloying. Since beer is often the same price or cheaper than water, I felt obligated to try a few NA's.

    4. Anyone know if hazelnut/haselnuss schnapps (not the sticky sweet kind) are sold in the US? We've brought some back on both of our last two trips, but it would be nice if we didn't have to.

    4) i‘ve looked for good schnapps in multiple eastern cities and have never found anything good. I take it home as well.

Good to know I'm not crazy and Denver isn't just deprived. Kirschwasser and Obstler are around, but not much else. Those don't really do it for me, but I find hazelnut (and walnut) schnapps to be delightful.

I spent two weeks in Germany/Austria with the family at the end of July: Berlin-Bamberg-Salzburg-Munich (my first time back in 25 years after spending 6 miserable months in Hamburg in the mid-90s).

This was my first real visit to Franconia and my main goal was to try as many Kellerbiers and Dunkels as I could for homebrewing research. I especially wanted to see if Franconian Dunkels are that different from Munich Dunkels and I did see them as darker, drier, and hoppier than the Munich ones (my favorite was at Mager in Pottenstein), but the Munich ones were not as malty as I expected them to be.

For Kellerbiers, I drink a fair amount of Mahrs U here since a local bar has fresh kegs almost all the time and so despite what I had heard about Mahrs dropping off I really enjoyed all the beers I had there. I really didn't have a bad beer anywhere in Franconia. And I had a lot of spectacular beers.

Speaking of Dunkels and Kellerbiers, has anyone tried the Paulaner Ur-Dunkel Naturtrüb: https://www.paulaner.de/produkte/bierspezialitaeten/ur-dunkel/

Is this a fairly new product? It seems like they have replaced their old Dunkel and gone back to the basics with an old-school unfiltered Dunkel. I grabbed a bottle of it in the supermarket on my way to the airport and I haven't tried it yet. I'd be interested to see what people think. I'll probably break it open this weekend.

AH! That actually makes a ton of sense. My wife an I ordered dunkels at Paulaner Im Tal and both of us thought it tasted nothing like we remember. They used to have the sweetest dunkel around. I have a sweet tooth and I still thought it was cloying. The ones this year were less dark and way, way less sweet. Nutty was the description both of us used. A friend of mine once described certain dunkels and dunkelweizens as tasting a little like peanut butter. Now I get that flavor myself. This was definitely one of those. I figured it was a freshness or batch thing, but a whole new beer makes a lot more sense.

Reviving this thread to seek recommendations for Munich. Will be spending 5 days there in mid-October (missing Oktoberfest, unfortunately). Staying in the Glockenbachviertel area, near Alter Südfriedhof. Looking for advice on must-visit beer destinations and fun tourist attractions. First time that my wife and I are visiting the city. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers

Bierwise, other than the Big 6 breweries, try these (all can be found here on BA):

Schneiders Weisses Brauhaus, Giesinger, Forschungsbrau, Andechs am Dom....

There's a Bier and Oktoberfest Museum downtown, off the street called Tal, on the eastern end...

The Englischer Garten, and their Biergartens...

The Deutsches Science Museum is A-1! - Not far from where you are...

Viktualien Market... food stands and biergartens... right downtown..

Lovely downtown churches, like Asam Kirche, St Peters and St Michaels, plus the Frauenkirche...

    Lots to do!

    Prosit!

    I’m just back.

my best pint was a HP Weiss in the HP house Viktualienmarkt. Phenomenal, the lacing on the glass was beautiful. The picture of it kinda gets me weirdly horny!

My next favourite place was the Nuremberg Glockl am Dom. Great food and beautiful Augustiner from the wooden barrel and decently priced.

    I love Munich.

They only gave you a pint? In Munich?

I realize you're using "pint" as a synonym to a pour, but has that become common?

A local used to serve Hacker-Pschorr Weizen on tap in the official H-P .5 liter glass. I told the bar tender I wasn't in the mood for a half liter of beer, she told me she could draw one in a pint glass (U.S. 16 ounce pint). I didn't have the heart to tell her a .5 liter and a pint are pretty close in volume... and she wanted to charge me half price.
