I just got my monthly e-mail from Wayerbacher saying that their pumpkin brew will be out earlier than normal. Which got my head going. I need to start planning for some pumpkin brew purchases.

And I need to plan it since I need to drive an hour to Massachusetts to buy them. I live in Connecticut and have pretty much given up on there being any good stores ever. The megastores in Mass are simply to good to be true.

Anyways, when should I start going to stores to get pumpkin ales? And what ones should i be sure to get while in Massachusetts?

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale, Stevens Point Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale (tastes similar to Weyerbacher, but sweeter), Cigar City Good Gourd, The Bruery Autumn Maple, Uinta Oak Jacked. Everyone rants and raves about Southern Tier Pumking, but I find it pretty awful and artificial tasting.

Harpoon UFO Pumpkin will be out very soon. It's one of my favorite pumpkin ales. Was at Eli Cannon's Beer Fest and Captain Lawrence had their pumpkin ale sampling. I thought both were quite good. My other go-tos are ST Pumking and Warlock, and Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin. I also enjoy Two Roads Roads Mary's Baby and Sam Adams Fat Jack, all of which will probably be out by the end of the month, early next month.

Warlock and Pumking from Southern Tier are on shelves already here in Grand Rapids. Different styles but both are enjoyable.

Couldn't believe it when I visited Weyerbacher 2 weeks back in the middle of summer (!) and they were selling and sampling the imperial pumpkin.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see Ghoulship until 2015. It took 3 years from brewing to release for the first batch and this most recent batch was brewed in 2012.

I inquired about Ghoulship about a year and a half ago and they mentioned it being ready in years. I am guessing we may see it this year.

Some fairly easy to come by favorites of mine are:

Fisherman's Imperial Pumpkin Stout - Cape Ann Brewing Company
Pumple Drumkin Spiced Ale - Cisco Brewers Inc.

If, like me, you prefer understated pumpkin ales that don't seem like pie in a bottle, Cambridge Brewing's Great Pumpkin is quite nice.

Yes, I want a pumpkin brew with little or no spices added. Any suggestions?

Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin is pretty amazing, but it's like a Pumpkin barleywine.

Love this thread!!! i love pumpkin beers but ive honestly only had a few. Pumkinhead is currently my favorite but thats probably due to the fact i havent had any of the big boys yet. My friend found a hoppin frog pumkin beer on a clearance shelf a few weeks ago and he said it was very good. Cant wait till these beers start hitting the stores full force for the fall.

Pumpkin itself adds very little "flavor" to a beer....it is the spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, etc) that give Pumpkin brews their flavor......pumpkin is a fermentable sugar source in a beer and adds some mouthfeel or body to a beer, but not much in the way of flavor....I have homebrewed with and without pumpkin, and with and without spices added.....the pumpkin beers without much or any spices taste like a brown ale for the most part. If you like something different - I enjoy Smuttynose Pumpkin as it is not super heavy on the spices and is a little hoppy, I like the combo....ditto for North Peak (aka Jolly Pumpkin) Hooligan....it is hoppy, and the hops overshadow the subtle pumpkin spicing in that beer.

Pumpkinhead is one of the least favorite of this style.....not a great brew IMO, but popular due to its easy drinking nature I suppose.....it is the "coors light" pumpkin version! Try some of the ones I mentioned above, especially the Imperial Pumpkins, the Hoppin Frog one is great (plus I live in Akron where HF is, so I get it fresh and often when it comes out later this month!)....cheers!

    Haha....everyone is a jokester, right?

Why troll on a Pumpkin beer thread if you do not like them?
