Must try porter?

I'm not much of a porter fan, but I was surprised at how much I liked Everett (sort of easy to get if you are up by the Notch). If you're near the MA border then Victory at Sea isn't far behind - also a great beer and I still see it on shelves in some MA bottle shops.

 

My favorite easily available porter is either the Smuttynose Robust Porter or Founders Porter. I like the BBC and Mayflower porters, as well, but not as much as Smutty or Founders, personally. Someone mentioned the White Birch Our Humble Porter, which I agree was very good, but is a spring seasonal I believe, so you might have to wait for that one. Since you're in New Hampshire, though, you could try the Henniker Working Man Porter if you get a chance. I just had a sample of it at the NH Brew Fest this weekend, so admittedly a limited sample, but I thought it was very good, and the head brewer at Henniker worked at White Birch, so I was expecting to find a fine porter there. It's not as easily available, but if you can get to Blue Lobster in Hampton, they make a very nice porter as well.

 

I always forget about that beer when people talk porters, I think because it's not on store shelves and I don't make it to CBC nearly as often as I'd like, so it's not top of mind anymore - but man is it great! It's probably one of my favorite straight porters come to think of it. I wonder if it will ever get the bottle treatment from CBC...

 

for my money, those are the ones.
