So I'm in Denver (more specifically Centennial) for the next two weeks for work. So pumped I missed GABF by a week... Any ways, what beers must I try while I'm in the area that I can't get from home in Boston? Side note, although there are a million threads about this so I don't need too much advice, what bars are the absolute necessities to visit while I'm here?
Haha if I weren't working so much, I definitely would do everything in my power to try everything in the area, but unfortunately time and resources are somewhat limited. Thanks for the info on the other threads, but I think I'm more trying to be lazy and have some locals give me an idea of what I should really focus on. What I'm really looking to try are some of the great IPAs available in Denver that won't be available elsewhere. Any suggestions? Got a 6-pack of Avery IPA in my hotel room so far
The two above are great and probably my favorite CO IPAs. Can you get Odell Myrcenary or Mountain Standard (awesome black IPA), Oskar Blues Deviant, New Belgium Super IPA
For the most part, I don't care for anything from Ft Collins Brewery and Breckenridge Brewery. Beers from breweries that were not around Boston when I lived there are Odell (haven't had a bad beer from them. I stick to the 12oz bottles, have never tried any of their bombers), Ska (Modus Hoperandi is an awesome IPA), Funkwerks (they focus on Belgian and saisons), Crooked Stave (American Wild Ales), and Dry Dock (like someone mentioned, Seven Seas is a great DIPA). Those are the big ones (well ones that can/bottle). If you're ever in Longmont, I recommend stopping at Osker Blues' Liquids and Solids. In addition to having their lineup on tap, they have an additional 30+ taps hosting beers from other breweries. Over the weekend they had Blind Pig, a barrel aged stout from Upslope, Matilda, and Enjoy By to name a few. And just down the road is their Tap Room where they often have beers on tap they don't can. Avery, Oskar Blues regular lineup, and Great Divide are all available in Boston. The info in the above mentioned thread is also very helpful, but there you have my two lazy cents.
For sure you have to check out Tipsy's. Their selsction is amazing and its enormous, they usually have one or two russian river brews or limited release you can get if you ask one of the beer guys, they keep them in the back. Also Avery in boulder is great, they have beers in their tap room you cant get elsewhere. Boulder in general is worth the drive. If youre staying in Denver though be sure to see Great Divide brewing. Some of the bus tours around there are pretty fun as well. Tipsy's Liquor World www.tipsysliquorworld.com/ Tipsy's Liquor World. Colorado's Premier Destination Wine & Spirits Retailer. Prost Brewing is can't miss. They're a stone's throw off the I-25 too. So convenient. http://www.prostbrewing.com/
The newest CO IPA with tons of accolades is Dank. Recipe by Dad & Dudes, brewed by Prost. You can find it around town in tall-boy six packs, or on tap at Prost. It's pretty freakin' good. Denver Beer Co does a bunch of different IPAs, too. They don't bottle or can, but it's worth a trip down there to check 'em out. Usually a little more balance than the crazy overhopped astringent stuff. And one last one... Upslope IPA... my favorite right now. More in and English style with as much malt as hops. Balance, balance, balance... and delicious, too.
Excellent, thanks for the recommendations. If any one wants to grab one or two at any of the aforementioned locations with me this weekend, shoot me a PM or something.
