A 3-way is always something to report on but this one was kind of a disappointment (in a way).

    The combatants:
    Schell Hefe
    Summit Hefe
    Enki Hefe

    * Not going into the methodology but those that follow me know the drill. Bottom line I had no idea what I was drinking.

    The results (scores 1-10):

    Schell Hefe: (9.25)
Not saying this is better than a fresh German Hefe as I've never really had one fresh but my belief is this would hold its own in Germany. I've been touting this for I'm thinking around 10 years and yet again it emerges unscathed in the blind taster. Perfect weight, balance with the esters between banana notes, lemon notes and cloves. Top notch. Still stunned its never won a huge competition. Maybe they don't enter it as it is not fresh at those times.

Summit Hefe (8.0) Rock solid. Nice balance here too between the esters but just a bit more subtle than Schells. Not that Schells is over the top. I consider Schells close to perfect and this just a little dialed down. It is good. Very good. Much better than any other Summit Hefe ever made.

Enki (0.5) Giving half a point for an assertive overripe (spoiled?) banana aroma. Other than that this is terrible. Spoiled, infected, rancid. Take your pick. I've had this at the brewery before and thought it decent enough so when I saw it in cans I was excited. What a waste. I might use the remaining 3 cans to boil brats in but worry they might taste spoiled after soaking in this crud. I'm sorry. I call it like I taste it. I'll cut a break to a newer place for awhile but this in unacceptable from a somewhat established brewery. They must have absolutely no quality control. I can't believe they could have tasted this and thought "Yeah fuck it put this shit out there...no one will know. We'll get it right next time.". I know.

I had the opposite experience with Enki's hefe, albeit three weeks ago. I gave it a 4.19 score on here noting good bubblegum, banana and clove. I have, however, experienced extreme inconsistencies from Enki in the past so I don't question your experience at all. It's sad they're quality control is so bad, because when their beers are on they are quite good.

I agree. I've had a 4.2+ hefe from them before and thus the reason I thought this would be an interesting matchup. This was bad though. Not slightly below average or room for argument on its plusses and negatives.....just plain terrible spoiled. You just cannot put a beer that turned out like the one I had in cans and send it out to market..

Looks like I’ll have to throw so summit into the rotation this summer. I always buy a good amount of schells, and as of the past couple years I consume a lot of the utepils hefe.

Too bad about Enki, haven’t had the hefe, but do drink their cacao porter

It's really disappointing to hear about the Enki Hefe. Maybe they had trouble canning it for the first time? I've only it on tap and I thought it was a very different but interesting version of a Hefe. I remember Enki's Hefe had a orange coloring and flavor when I had it.

I completely agree about Schell's Hefe being almost a perfect version of a Hefe. The only thing I ever complain about it is that it doesn't also come in cans.

@bergbrew - any chance for cans in the future for Schell's Hefe?

I always enjoy reading your tastings, @ZAP. Good to read that Summit's "tweaks" have improved their hefe. I may have to try the Enki just out of a kind of morbid curiosity (probably not, though.) I was considering another hefe tasting myself. We'll see how things go.

Hi ZAP, I really appreciate that you chose to try ENKI Hootenanny along side other Hefe's. However, I'm sorry that you had such a disappointing experience. We always want to give customers a high quality product. If you haven't already used the remainder for cooking I'd like to get it back from you for testing. We'll replace with growlers of Hootenanny or another ENKI beer of your choice. Please give us a call at 952-300-8408 or email me at [email protected]. Again, our apologies for a a disappointing experience. We want to get this right. Sincerely, John Hayes, co-founder, ENKI Brewing.

    i would rank 'em:
    Schells
    Utepils
    Summit
    <the rest>

I usually enjoy Enki at the Wednesday night car shows in Victoria. Not to the level of Schells but not like ZAP's description. I haven't seen if Steel Toe has their Sommer Vice out and was hoping to get some last Sunday. Schells and Summit did get into rotation yesterday. I love the Summit wit (skip rock).

I think Waldmann has the best weizen but you can only get it at the brewery.

    John,

I appreciate the offer. I can send you back what I have. No need to replace it but I appreciate the offer. I'm going to try one more tonight and if it is the same I'll send you the other two. If it's not and better I'll make note of that in this thread. The one yesterday tasted nothing like the hefe on tap at your place which I've had on two different occasions.

I clearly was too harsh in the way I summed up my experience with the infected beer in this post. I should have just said it was infected and left it at that. It definitely is not the way a "Poo-Bah" should write.

I have had experiences with some breweries that just don't care about getting it right but that is clearly not the case with Enki. I can't edit it at this point so consider this a retraction of final three sentences.

I compared Utepils and Schell's hefeweizen's the other night. The Utepils seems more rich in the wheat malt and fuller body while the Schell's has the bright yeast esters and rounded flavor. I had some Enki Hootenanny from cans a couple weeks ago and they tasted fine but I was never a big fan of Hootenanny. Another problem is that you can almost buy a 12-pack of Schell's ($13.99) for a 4-pack of Enki ($10.99). Need to drop that price by $3 a 4-pack for me to consider buying it again.

That's interesting. What was it previously? Guessing around 5.0 or less than that?

I revisited tonight. Definitely some green apple/sour issues. I'll either drop off these other two cans or get them to you another way. I'll be down that way over Memorial Day so if I can make a detour out that way I will. Otherwise I'll get them to you by early June at the latest.
