I should have mentioned that to begin with too... I used purified water with 5 grams calcium chloride and 3 grams gypsum... does that sound too light? I tried to find a good answer to this and that’s what I settled on.

If you add enough hops, you'll get slightly hazy with an orange sunburst appearance.

Agreed. Just wondering as I was thinking the same thing about it being overcomplicated. Trillium uses c20 in lots of their ipas I would say used judiciously that they have a place.

Or you could use a slightly more kilned base malt like Belgian pale(castle 3.5) or marris otter. I prefer domestic pilsner but color isn’t something I care about that much.

I agree with everything that has been said here as being prudent steps to take, but I'm hoping that everyone is aiming at the right problem. So I'd be interested in a further explanation about what you tasted. In one way it sounds like you were tasting hop tea, but in another way it sounded like you were tasting a weak malt flavor. Are all of the various recommendations above making sense toward hitting the mark for what you tasted?

I took it as "the beer tasted bland". I, very obviously, could be wrong, though.

Well yes, the focus as shifted to holes in my recipe, which of course I have no way of knowing whether they will help with my issue, but I do appreciate any input. When my wife tasted the sample she did note that it tasted pretty similar to a hop tea I made a few weeks ago, so I would say that was the predominant flavor. As far as a weak malt flavor, with it being an ipa I’m not too concerned with that, although I of course don’t want it to come out unbalanced and astringent

It's true and I for one believe that everyone is doing the right thing by using that combination. HUGE Citra fan and not ashamed!

I think everyone else has given some good advice about increasing dry hops and next time whirlpooling more (or post boil hop stand). Just out of curiousity, hows the beer's aroma? Un-carbonated green beers can be hard to get a real taste for especially if there is a lot of yeast still in suspension.

Good question... when I smelled the airlock during fermentation (that’s normal, right?) it smelled like I had my face in a bag of hops, along with a sharp carbonic scent, which I assume is normal

Yup, hop aromatics are being 'scrubbed out' by the CO2 during primary fermentation. Dry hopping will re-add aromas.

    Cheers!

No need to be ashamed. Citra is my dollar for dollar favorite hop for ipas.

Golden Promise, Oats, Citra. Any NEIPA style yeast. Great combo!

I like doing 6-11oz of c15 in my 5.5g batches. Decent color and doesn't really add anything too noticable to the beer. It was def inspired by trillium though .

@CShell1234 ,,, I love your reference to"hop tea". It is my biggest bitch about many of the commercial popular brews today.
Personally, I love some crystal malt in my IPA/ pale ale brews. They add flavor, color and blend well with hops. It used to be standard procedure to use them in these brew but currently have fallen by the wayside.

Keep experimenting till you find what is best for you!!!

I have refrained from posting to this for a while as the focus seemed to change from your original question, and as I am of the mindset that "it is your beer" so your recipes is yours.

At first I wanted to say "at least it tastes like beer," and leave it at that. Also as this is your second batch, and a quick switch to all grain, I would say you are doing OK. I am also assuming that you really were shooting for a full in your face NEIPA kind of flavor. Not tasting like what you were expecting, doesn't make your beer taste bad. I would say that if you were shooting for that NEIPA kind of thing, you would need more hops. My first go at a NEIPA used only 8oz of hops and I liked it, but it was not the "JOOOOSE" that my homebrewclub was expecting due to my hop choices. Also I have no experience with the yeast you used, but have not seen it mentioned in typical NEIPA recipes.

Pretty sure the lb of 6 row ruined it.

I don’t know why your eff was low but crush is the first place I look. But an ipa coming in at 1.056 sounds great to me. With more dry hop and carbonation you’ll have a different beer on your hands

FYI, I was kidding about the 6-row, but my winkie wink emoji seems to have gotten deleted.
