I like to make my own recipes, and brew all grain beer, so I've spent the last few weeks re-reading my brewing books. I wanted to get away from using all the websites and several excel calculators to make my beer. I started to learn how to make recipes on paper instead of on websites, but somehow this led me to make my own brewing spreadsheet!
I designed New Brew 2 to be simple. A minimum of 13 cells can be used to calculate an all grain brew day! I never liked using programs that have too much information on the page.
The fundamentals of New Brew 2 are that the user must know; your average Mash Efficiency, desired Original Gravity Units, Size of Batch and the percentages of your Grain Bill.
The biggest learning curve will be using percentages for the Grain Bill instead of the typical LBS. However, using percentages is what makes New Brew 2 so powerful. For example:
LBS of Grain will be calculated automatically based on your Efficiency, Volume, Percentages, and Original Gravity. The LBS of grain will automatically change when, for instance, you alter the desired Original Gravity.
Increasing the finished volume of your favorite recipe is easy; simply change the Size of Batch and the Grain amounts will be updated automatically.
Another unique feature is that New Brew 2 calculates the needed points per pound per gallon (PPG) based the amount of wort in the kettle after the boil. Why is this important? Wort is lost to trub, hoses, and equipment after the boil, and topping off the fermenter with water will only dilute your gravity. New Brew 2 calculates for these losses of volume. For example:
You desire 5.25 gallons of 1.050 wort in the fermenter at the end of the brew day. The PPG from this batch is 262.5. What will happen is that you will inevitably lose some wort when transferring from the kettle to the fermenter. You would then be left with 4.75 gallons of 1.050 wort in the fermenter, and topping off with water will not solve your problem. New Brew 2 solves this issue by calculating your PPG based on your desired 5.25 gallons plus additional calculated volume. Giving you more like 5.7 gallons of 1.050 wort in the kettle after the boil, this will result closer to 5.25 of 1.050 wort in the fermenter. The LBS of grain in your recipe will be calculated based on 285 PPG instead of 262.5 PPG.
My intent was to leave the complicated math to Excel and not in human hands. However, I have left this Excel file unlocked so that formulas can be changed if need be. You might find that you boil off more than I do.
Also, the lists of Grains, Hops, Yeast, and Styles can all be updated. Simply add to the lists and then use the Excel “Name Manager” to Edit and update the range of list. This comes in handy when a new hop hits the market, and you want to be the first to use it.
Let me know what you think. I hope it helps!

I made some updates to my spreadsheet. I've added:
    A decoction procedure.
A recipe scaling calculator. (very helpful if you want to double or triple your recipes)
    Converters and other helpful calculators

Excellent job, very complete and well organized. Thanks for that. Until now I've used Promash on my living room computer, now I can take my laptop to the garage and enter what I actually do, not what I planned to do the day before.
