Having not lived in Boston since I was 19, over a decade ago, and not being in the craft beer scene then, where should I tell him to go? He'll be staying south of the city about 20 miles but spending a lot of time in Boston going to the Sox/Yanks series all weekend. On the beer front, where do I tell him to go? Can you get Trillium anywhere besides the brewery? What about other top notch breweries? I need him to bring some back to the Midwest... Thanks.
I'm not sure about 20 miles south of the city, but there is a Craft Beer Cellar in Fenway right near the stadium. They will have some good local MA and New England beers. Night Shift brews are always around. Jack's Abby specializes in lagers. Clown Shoes has good stuff. If you're lucky might get some Building 8 IPA. Trillium hasn't distributed to stores since they started canning (that I know of anyway), and Tree House is out of the question unless your dad is willing to drive to the brewery and wait in line for a while. Trillium should be fairly easy to get to when in the area. The Fort Point location is more of a walk or cab/uber/lyft. Canton is easily accessible by car. Try to look for places that specify craft beer and not just the typical liquor store. There you will find some good local stuff. Unfortunately the most sought after stuff is usually brewery only. Tell him to be specific about good MA/New England beers that aren't available in your state. We have a lot of good beer, it just depends what kind of beers you want. There's a lot of beer from throughout New England and New York and other states that probably don't distribute to you as well. Try making a list if you haven't already. Checking brewery and store websites can also help with seeing what's available. Inventory can be ever changing around here.
I'll second the Craft Beer Cellar in The Fenway area. It has most of what you'd want aside from Trillium. If he went just there and Trillium, you'd be set.
If he is 20 miles south of the city, a stop at Trillium Canton should not be too much of a burden for him.
