Pay attention to how old your yeast is. I don't know the Brewtoad pitching calculator, but a good calculator will take account the age of the yeast. Older yeast means more dead cells which means you should pitch more.

Well, I ended up pitching 2 packets of yeast and my lid exploded off LOL. Failed this batch.

What was the temperature of your wort (not the air temp) when your lid "exploded off?" And why do you think it's a fail....did you not clean and sanitize the lid and replace it (perhaps with a blowoff tube in place)?

I didn't check the temp... should I now? Everything is cleaned and sanitized. I am thinking because I used both yeast packets instead of one which is why the lid exploded off?

You had "aggressive fermentation"...it happens sometimes with higher OG brews with lots of viable yeast. Next time you want to brew a DIPA or higher gravity brew, you may want to make and use a blow off tube/airlock to prevent the bung/airlock from exploding off. As VikeMan mentioned, as long as you resanitize and put the airlock back on, you most likely still have a batch that'll turn out just fine.

It's a good idea to monitor (and control) temperature throughout the fermentation. My guess is that your wort was very warm, causing a very fast/active fermentation.

Two smack packs in a high gravity 5 gallon batch was not too much. Not even close to too much. Not even if brand spanking new fresh.

Well I cleaned and sanitized the lid and air lock, put it back on and not even a few hours later the air lock was foaming and it looked ready to explode off again. So I lifted the lid and the foam from my wort was almost touching the lid.

So 2 yeast packets was not to much? When I brew this recipe again should I do 1 packet or 2?

A few things im.thinking that could have gone wrong...

Wort was at to high of a tempature (but I don't think it was any higher then 73°F.

I did not aerate the wort well enough before pitching my yeast. I was not familiar with this. (I know rookie mistake).

I may have pitched my yeast at to high of a tempature? Although It was around 73°F

It took probabaly an 1 1/2 to cool my wort to yeast pitching tempature. I did a 6 gallon boil and used the snow method. I have a wort chiller on the way so that will help with that.

I'm hoping it was 1 of the reasons I mention above. Next time I brew this recipe I will be sure to perfect all those issues and hope to have no problems.

Use brewing software/yeast calculator to figure out how much to pitch. Don't underpitch just because you had blowoff.

73F ambient plus heat from fermentation plus high gravity wort = big blowoff

Do a search on Blowoff Tube or Blowoff Hose.

Not trying to be an ass, but you need to read "How to Brew" by Palmer. Amazon sells a hard copy cheap or you can find the earlier edition online. If you have already read the book, you need to read it again.
