I love this beer,It taste great every-time,the only reason I wanna tweak it is EXPERIMENTATION ,I got some Oatmeal Brown Sugar/Maple today (10 packs =15.3 ozs I think pretty close and my question was if I do this,WHAT sorta taste will I come up with? Now I know that's a Very loaded question, but I was hoping to give more a creamy taste with some more sweetness,,,just a #2 German Bock. I plan on putting this Brown Sugar Maple Oatmeal (Starting a 1/2 pound) in a mesh bag and STEEPING it witrh my grains?? Thoughts?

Open this link to viw Recipe,if you like it try it,,Wow great beer, around an 8%ABV.With the Brown Sugar/Maple do you think my ABV will increase slightly? More sugar it should right? I read all me responses, and YOU each play an important part here,so please chim in!! Larry

It could be good. One question I have is does the oatmeal have any additives? Preservatives or additional chemicals may mess with the yeast.

I will check out to see if it has any Preservatives or additives!! When would I add this if I am ok? Last few minutes of boil in a grain bag?

I can't see the image. If you're just wanting the sugar/maple then the end of the boil could be fine. Not sure if there would be astringency from boiling the oats. I don't think there would be if it's oatmeal.

If you want fermentable sugary out creaminess the mash may be better.

Apparently my phone cut off my message. I was saying that normally oats are included through the mash. I don't think there'd be a problem having the sugar in there as well but I know honey and invert sugar is normally added in the boil.

Are you trying to use instant oatmeal or raw oatmeal?

Raw/standard oatmeal would just be adding flaked oats to the mash or grits if it is steel cut oatmeal.
Instant oatmeal may already have a lot of the conversion/processing that may help it be more soluble... But I don't know if any sugar in the oats themselves would be fermentable or if they would still need to go with malt in the mash.

If you are wanting the oatmeal to be similar to people adding flaked oats to their stouts or NE IPA's then I'd suggest mashing the oatmeal with your malt.

If you are primarily wanting to add brown sugar and maple and the oats are just incidental then I'd try throwing it in the last 5-10 minutes.

Personally, I would stay away from it. If it is the quaker instant oatmeal maple & brown sugar here is the label
By all means throw some brown sugar and maple in there, but not this way
