I noticed today that my style count had dropped from 120 to 119. It seems that Coedo Beniaka, my only Happoshu, has been reclassified as an American Amber/Red Lager, although its description reads in part:
Is Happoshu being phased out as a style category here? Is there an actual style description beyond the legal definition?

Yes, because it's technically not a beer style. Cc: @shigg85

Is it because it is a, I dunno, classification for tax purposes? So the style itself is going away? Or just some specific beers are recategorized?

I was glad I had the tick. I no longer do.

Sill missing faro! Time to see what else has changed.

Also let's not forget that Beniaka was not a reason Happoshu. I have mentioned this before. Just because it's made in Japan and has some adjuncts doesn't mean that it's a Happoshu. I was talking to @jzeilinger about this just the other day.

Thank @shigg85. He’s the one who volunteered to reassign all of the beers.

Welp, down one style I had, but still 4 to go. 3 I haven't seen in years (gruit, sahti, biere de champagne), and one I know I won't like (milkshake IPA)

Title had me thinking this thread was going to be about a Japanese strain of Corona lime disease.

Why does it still show up under the styles list?

Once all of the beers have been reassigned, the style will be deleted - There are still some beers that have not yet been reassigned but they are being worked on.

Oh, good...now I'll only be missing 19 styles instead of 20. Now trying every style seems achievable .

Happoshu was one of the last ones I scored on my quest for 104 styles back in the good old days. After hunting all over hell and gone, I finally found that Beniaka at Weiland's Market in Columbus. Now I'm glad happoshu as a BA style is going away.

Ticking was a whole lot easier when it was just ales and lagers.

I've had every style except Faro, I haven't been able to find this style in the U.S. My daughter found me a can of Happoshu at Total Wine in Washington state.

Keep an eye on Archival Brewing's website beer list because I think this brewery puts out unusual styles on a regular basis. They currently have a Sahti (including a BA Sahti), Kotbusser and Grisette on tap, and when I was recently there I saw some of their beers in cans to go. They distribute a bit, so 'maybe' they'll come up with a Faro and distribute it to your store, or maybe you want to take a road trip to suburban Grand Rapids. (Email and ask them if they've done a Faro.)

I’d like to see Speciation or Vivant out out a faro. Maybe a whole Faro Festival if a few of them collaborate!

Lindemans Faro Lambic seems to be pretty widely available. Googling "Lindemans faro lambic beer michigan where to buy" yields a few results. You could also order it online (see https://store.belgianshop.com/geuze-lambic-fruits/1188-faro-lindemans-4-375cl.html).
NB: Nobody said style quests are cheap. :money_mouth:

To reiterate before closing this thread...
    • Happoshu isn't a style; added many years ago in error
    • All beers within the listing are being moved to other styles accordingly
    • Once that's complete, the Happoshu listing will be removed
The impact is very minimal with no loss of ratings/reviews.

It looks like happoshu came back as a style - I think nixing that was a good move, it's not really a beer style and could incorporate anything from a herbed / spiced beer, gluten free - it's just what Japan taxes a beverage that is below some sort of barley threshold for the fermentable (I think).

(Moved your post into this thread from an unrelated one.)

Happoshu hasn't come back. As noted above, entries are still being sorted and the style will be removed once that's completed.

    Thanks!
