Thanks to a mind winter my hops broke ground yesterday. This is their 4th season , first two they didn't come up till Memorial day because they were under 3-6 inches of water from the rain. Last year the were up about the second week of May. With any luck the weather will stay good and I'll have a nice harvest. Last year I gave away about 1 1/2 pounds to a couple guys via craigslist. Maybe this year I can do the same ,or brew a ton of IPA's.
I had my hops break ground in about the third week of march. Trimmed them back for a couple of days and then said fuck it. Layed down a new layer of manure and top soil, restrung up my rope, and they are already at 6 feet or so. As long as we don't get a hard freeze I'll certainly be getting two harvests this year, which works for me as I just exhausted my 2011 Centennials on my last brew day. This weather in the Midwest (and seemingly across the county) has been absolutely insane. Cheers!
Mine are up 6-8" already...very early for New England. I guess I have to get the strings up pretty soon and pray that it doesn't get too hot too soon.
We've had an incredibly warm winter here in NC. My cascades have bee up for about 3 weeks, and have already reached 7 feet, outgrowing the first section of my trellis. I love how they look almost like an animal (snake, dragon) searching for their next bine-hold.
mine are currently about 4 inches tall with a coating of snow on them. The leaves that were developing are already looking in rough shape as we've had at least one night now down in the teens since they've popped up. I'll see, hoping this cold spell we're having isn't going to seriously affect them.
I have about 5 to 6 2'' shoots that i will probably cut back before i fertilize and set up the trellis.
All 9 existing varieties are exploding this year...but still waiting for new Santiam and Golding rhizomes to break ground (planted on St. Patrick's Day).
Yep, mine are way ahead of schedule, about a foot tall and spreading all freaking over. I'm actually burned out on dealing with them. Seemed like such a great idea a few years back during the shortage. Now it just seems like way too much work vs. buying pellets for $2/oz. Ugh, better get my trellis system up.
We had one week of really cold weather in January. Its going to be near freezing tonight. Hopefully the hops are fine...
Haha. Good luck getting those rhizomes. You would have to fly down there and sneak out into the bineyards to do it.
Just got my order from Northern Brewer and hope to plant them this weekend. First time growing hops. ... I know hops grow like crazy. Any success stories controlling them in terms of pruning? I'd like to keep mine in that 6 to 8 feet range.
