good afternoon all. Heading to myrtle beach Tomm for the week and looking for some recommendations for bottle shops and bars. From what I have seen so far the pig looks like the best place, I was wondering if there were any other good spots to check out within 20 or so miles of myrtle. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers
The Pig for bottles and Atlas Tap House for a bar. There are others, but those would be tops on my must visit list.
Piggly Wiggly, the "good one" in that fancy shopping center, not the "other one". Sorry, that's how I always remembered the place when I traveled there. The bottle selection is nice, they sell singles, and even do growler fills.
As said, Market Common Pig and Atlas are great. My favorite spot in Myrtle is the combination of Fire and Smoke, Hurricane Maggies and Liberty taproom. Fire and Smoke, to my knowledge, is one of the only gastropubs around and will give you one of the absolute best dining options at the beach. They always have a well thought out tap selection with a focus on SC beers. The staff at Hurricane Maggies are true BA's that know how to put a good tap list together, while having only a few taps (15ish). Liberty taproom has one of the largest tap selections in Mytrle and they do a decent job. These locations are all on the same block and can supply and entire night or two of beer fun.
Green's Beverage is also pretty good but agreed, Piggly Wiggly is the best bet in the area. Green's has improved it's selection in the past couple years. You can also check out New South Brewing. Free Tours Tues & Thurs at 3pm I believe. They give you 3-4 samples .
Sorry for hijacking this thread but I figured it'd make sense to post this in here rather than making a new one. I'll be heading down to MB at the end of August and have noted that the Pig is the best place to go for cans/bottles. However, I am not at all familiar with the beers available in this area. As someone who likes pale ales and IPAs (for the most part, but I also like more drinkable summer beers like blondes and kolsches), what breweries or specific beers should I be on the lookout for?
Kolsch from Coast is as good as you will find. Westbrook one claw sounds right up your alley. Try to find westbrooks ipa fresh or on tap, one of my fave ipas. Im sure youre already aware of the westbrook gose, but if not, its the best "hot day on the beach beer" ever. All of these offerings are in cans and beach ready.
You may be able to find some Westbrook Citrus Ninja Exchange. It's usually released late July or early August. One of my favorite IPAs. Coast Hop Art is a solid year round IPA in addition to the Westbrook stuff mentioned above.
Check out Lowe's Foods in Carolina Forest. Lots of Westbrook and nice growler fill selection. Grabbed a growler of Mexican Cake there last week. But yeah, the pig is the best spot.
If you find yrself in north myrtle check out Pavillion @ 1301 hwy 17 south..growler station and great selection...also the Mellow Mushroom up north has something good on tap..
I'm currently in Oak Island but thinking about heading down to MB for a day on Tuesday or Thursday. Is New South worth a stop for a tour or a quick stop at the taproom?
I think new south is 4 to 7 on certain days. We always go.to atlas tap house, which usually has great selections and a new place called grumpy monk
By the way, Oak Island is my second home not much there, but Check out, If YOU Haven't Already, Grape and Ale, Flights , loco joes, and the new brewery Check Six, they have Average beers
I visit Oak Island once a year, it's almost like a second home to me too! I had already checked out Grape and Ale this trip, plan on hitting Flights and Check Six later this week. Might have to check out Loco Joes too! I did see that New South does brewery tours at 3 on Tuesday and Thursdays and have draft pours from 4:30-7 PM. I realize there are other spots in Myrtle Beach (like Atlas Tap House) but I'm more into checking out breweries. Is New South worth the stop - or is there another brewery/brewpub in town that is a better option?
As a couple have said....Piggly Wiggly is the best. I spent a whole day last week beer store shopping and no one but PW had anything of note in my opinion.
Pavilion Beverage off hwy 17 in North Myrtle not far from Main St. Right across from the Krispy Kreme. There is a cool new bowling alley next to it. The pig is the best for sure but a haul from North Myrtle/Cherry Grove. Pavilion has a growler filling station. Word of warning on this place. They have a nice selection but check canned/bottle dates. I have seen some old Westbrook IPA and other items. Also if you get a growler fill make sure it's filled to the top. I had my mom pick up a growler of Mexican Cake and there was a sizable amount of air in the growler.
For taps, the North Myrtle Mellow Mushroom is your best bet. The 710 Bowling Alley actually has decent taps and good food, along with the bowling, darts, and other games. Piggly Wiggly Market Common is worth the drive, have lunch at nearby Tupelo Honey, they have good taps including several SC locals. If you time it right, you can shop a little after lunch, then hit New South on the way back to North Myrtle.
I never get to N Myrtle but Ive seen Hurricaine Maggies mentioned before. This year I had a night at Liberty Steak House and to be honest save your money. Mediocre beer is the least of the problems, the food really sucked, tough steaks, cold food and they weren't even all that busy.
