does Greens or any other bottle shop in MB carry what I consider 'juicy' IPA/IIPA's comparable to HDR or anything even close? Thanks!
The Piggly Wiggly is a pretty good answer in the South of Myrtle, they have a real good selection. Pavilion liquors in NMB. Those are your best two options for stores.
I think the Wiggly is in a place called "Market Commons". They have a growler station, too. It was above and beyond what I've seen at a normal grocery store.
I liked Coast stuff. I think Boy King might be out. I can't remember if it might be called "juicy" or not, to be honest. But it was good. Woops, nevermind, I guess they aren't bottling this batch per their website. Maybe try Hop Art?
Owens is a little steep and you need to watch the dates. I picked up some Westbrook and was not really paying close attention to the price and dating, because I was happy to get them, and they were way overpriced for one and the dates were on the older side. I can't remember the name of the places but there is a pretty boring looking building in NMB on 17 and they had a very good selection, still kind of pricey but they had a good selection of everything. I did not go to the Pig, I wish I had checked it out!
This isn't answering your question directly, but the Pig at Market Common (check their Facebook page)is your best bet for everything. They would have the best selection of any SC brew available plus they carry a lot of brands no one else does in the area. That being said, Pavillion in N. Myrtle has a good selection if you are up north, yesterday they had Westbrook 4th & 1000 IPA at the growler station plus bottles of WB Fisticuffs & Founders Blushing Monk. And in closing, you need to watch dates everywhere you go.
I was at greens this week and the had deal w the devil, nightmare on brett st, Christmas bomb and Xcocoveza on the shelf. I gambled on the Xcocoveza after reading bad reviews on the age. While it wasnt as goo f as it was fresh, it was still good and still a hell if a bargin at 8.99
Agree on Pavilion and the Pig. Maine brewing is distro'd down there. Maybe juicy isn't the best word, but I really like their pales and IPA's fresh. But you really have to check their dates because I'm not sure how often it hits or how long it sits on shelves. When I was down in November I picked up a Peeper Ale that was way out of date and, in the immortal words of Charles Barkley, it was "turribly" malty.
Now that I think about it the boring looking building I was referring to was Pavilion in NMB, but I could not swear to it. From the road the right side of the building was beer and whatever has to be sold with beer per crazy SC laws and the left side (door) was hard liquor and whatever you can buy in that side, seems like you had to get mixers and ice in the beer side too. I don't think they had a growler station when I was in there, but I wasn't looking for one either. The liquor side had a hell of a rum and whiskey selection. If you are driving north on the (business? 17, which ever one that parallels the street that is on the beach Ocean Blvd., I never can figure out those roads, they merge and change all the time) main road its on the right the same side as the ocean. Still wish I had gone to the Pig!
I need to check out this Piggly Wiggly the next time I go to Myrtle. Every one I have been to was pretty, ummm, lacking.
The Wiggly at Market Common is not a joke, at all. @beerbyrd is the store operator. He's a hell of good guy, very knowledgeable, and truly cares about the selection that he offers. If you check his profile, it has a link to an FB group that posts new arrivals and what is available at the growler station. And if you read this thread Mike, I still owe you a beer IIRC. I'll have to send you something here in the near future if I get the chance Cheers!
And what I mean by boring, because I had lack of a better description, is it doesn't have a shark or some crazy kitschy thing outside of it, like just about other shop of any type in MB does, at least that is how it was last summer when I was down there. Good to know someone can give the name, I really wasn't paying attention because it was the closest place that had a decent selection from the condo I was in.
Yeah, no problem. I'm not sure I would describe it any way other than boring, really. My mom has a condo just north of there and I did a little recon last time I stayed there. I was surprised they had the selection they did, even had some Lunch hidden under the counter. You definitely have to watch your dates, though, as others have stated.
True true! They may have jazzed it up some since I was down there too. Interesting they had Lunch! I wasn't looking for Maine beers then because they were not in my radar at the time, but next time I will certainly keep an eye out. About freshness dates, I wonder how fresh those Maine beers were, I just drank a month old Lunch and even it was beginning to fall off a little. I think their beers are so delicate that it does not take very long for them to lose something. Not that it was bad, it was great, but I felt like it was probably awesome on tap or within a week or so of bottling. Getting them all the way to SC is a little bit worrisome. But maybe not! Hopefully they will start canning their beer too, I think all IPA's/DIPA's should be canned to keep them as fresh as possible.
do you go to school at Coastal Carolina per chance? Just graduated from there. Cosign on Piggly Wiggly MC
