For those of you who have viewed the "The beer of your state" thread and would like to see the selections from R.I. and N.H narrowed down to a single brew for each state, here is an opportunity to chime in.

Rhody; although Captain's Daughter is an excellent IPA, I feel that Narragansett Lager is the most iconic beer in the state.

New Hampshire; That's a tough one.
Old Brown Dog is to me the best example of light bodied ABA, not at all resembling a Porter. Finest Kind is a one of the best reasonably priced IPAs.
I'm on the fence for New Hampshire.

    What is your opinion?

Might be short-sighted, but I feel like something from Schilling would be more appropriate. Like Alexander.

Smuttynose simply isn't relevant anymore, and they haven't been for awhile.

I really liked every beer I have tried from Schilling, it would be impossible for me to pick one. I see Finest Kind in most bottle shops in R.I. and Mass.

If I had to choose between Old Brown Dog and Finest Kind, I would go with O.B.D., it seems more iconic to me than F.K. Cheers.

Schilling, I don't think you could pick just one beer. It's, like, the whole portfolio and then sitting out on the deck eating pizza all afternoon in the sun.

Assuming the Budweiser plant in Merrimack is a disqualification, I'd go with Stoneface IPA.

For MA would someone need to pick one of Treehouse's 1500 different beers?

I dont know when they jumped on the sour beer bandwagon but they did and Ive seen them around. Last one I saw was the Cherry Cheesecake sour but I didnt pick it up though. Are you saying their sour beers are all bad ? Im curious.

You all know I'm a big lager guy through and through, but even I'd probably say Julius.

Although one could argue Harpoon IPA or Boston Lager...but I dunno. Given how craft beer has went the last 10-13 years, I'm inclined to say Julius.

Not sure I've even had that from them. But between the brand itself being forgotten, and the inconsistentcy of their beers, especially Finest Kind, I don't think I could name it for NH.

If it was say, 30+ years old, maybe? But the window for it being relevant simply wasn't that big, or that impactful in my opinion.

First brewed in 2004, so you could argue it wasn't all that relevant less than ten years later.

I don't want to get into another argument about Boston Lager, a beer I enjoy, but a beer I think, in this day and age, gets unfairly put on a pedestal above more worthy and influential beers for the current state of craft beer.

RI is tough. Agree with the two picks from the OP, although Narragansett Lager wasn’t actually brewed in RI for quite sometime, it is now brewed in state again.

I’d probably lean towards Captain’s Daughter or Proclamation Derivative (or Tendril). Grey Sail and Proclamation were not the first, but to me were the two breweries that really paved the way for many craft brewers in the state to follow.

For NH, I’d lean Alexandr. Coincidentally, Alexandr and Tendril were the two “special” beers I was able to bring in for my wedding so I’m biased.

Vermont has to be Heady right?

I think that's probably true. Honorable mention for Edward, which was on tap basically everywhere during my last trip to VT.

    I'd go with...

    Maine Lunch
    RI Derivative
    MA Julius
    CT Fuzzy Baby Ducks
    NH Stoneface IPA
    VT Heady

They're all IPAs or DIPAs, so apologies there...

NNE looks right on but I'd go with Captain's Daughter and Sea Hag for RI and CT, respectively.

Hard to argue with you there, especially on CT. I've definitely had way more cans/pints of Sea Hag.

For Maine it feels like Allagash White is really the only choice. I would entertain the argument for Lunch, but Allagash really put Maine on the map more than a decade before MBC existed, and remains extremely popular and relevant today.

Allagash has also been the anchor tenant on Industrial Way, helping the likes of MBC, Bissell, Foundation, Battery Steele, Austin Street, Definitive get their footing...

This is my final pitch for Narragansett Lager being the pick for R.I.

Below is from the "The beer of your state" thread in the Beer Talk forum started by @jonphisher

Create a list that contains the beer that best represents each state in the US.

The goal here is to pick the beer that best represents, is associated with your state, or is uniquely representative of your state. Personal preferences aside...you do not have to like or think the beer is the best in your state, THAT IS NOT THE GOAL, if you happen to like it, great. but lets see if we can one up all the "list" articles and make a definitive list together as a community, I personally think we are better suited as a group than a single writer/magazine doing this, go team BA.

I believe that Narragansett Lager is the best match to the above criteria, that said, it appears that Capitan's Daughter is the choice of the people. If Capitan's daughter remains in front, I will withdraw my vote from the original "The beer of your state" forum. I'll get over it, I've never really cared for N.L. If another beer gets more votes, the same applies. Cheers.

I guess my brain read the thread title as Craft beer of your state. If it's simply 'beer' then absolutely Narragansett would represent Rhode Island and I change my uncast ballot accordingly.
