Hi All - yes, I know there is a rating feature, reviews, beers of fame etc., but really wanted to create this thread to open the discussion around what YOU, as an individual, identify as 5 beers you think all beer drinkers should try, and why. Pretend you are introducing an Alien to the world of beer - they've never had a beer before but want to learn as much about them as possible. Preferably beers that are regularly or semi-regularly accessible, so that interested parties actually have a decent shot at trying them.

Note: this isn't necessarily your top 5 beers, rather, beers that you think are great examples of the style, consistent, etc.

    I'll start:

    1) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - this is the OG of Pale Ales in my opinion and truly sets the standard for the style. Amazingly consistent, easily accessible and tasty as all hell.

    2) Bourbon County Stout - slightly less accessible, albeit for the flood the past couple of years. Goose Island perfected barrel aging with this stout.

    3) Ayinger Celebrator - a great example of a well done beer. There is absolutely nothing I can say wrong about Celebrator.

    4) Westmalle Trappist Tripel - a fantastic example of Belgian beer.

    5) Saison Dupont - I am consistently blown away every time I drink a Dupont. So complex yet delicate at the same time.

Which beers are on your list?

    Heineken NA - lager
Guinness NA (haven't had it myself yet) - stout
Weihenstephaner hefeweizen NA - wheat beer
Brewdog Nanny State NA - pale ale
Brooklyn Special Effects NA - why not the variety pack for some IPA? The Hoppy Amber is the basis though.

Just to make up your own mind. Everybody can't like them as much as I do

I would hand the alien a Bud and depending on his reaction take it from there.

Even though I find it unlikely aliens wouldn't have a more advanced beer culture than we have, I think shining examples of the range and quality our brewers' art and skill would be well received on any planet (limiting to beers that aren't impossible to get/ not retired)

    Cantillon Fou Foune
    Hill Farmstead Everett
    Kern River Citra
    Suarez Palatine Pils
    Fremont BA Dark Star

Five?! Doesn't beer come in sixers?:grin:

I'd be inclined to go the classics route, and make sure to at least include a continental lager, English ale, Belgian ale and American ale.

    - freshest Munich Helles available
    - Fuller's London Pride
    - Saison Dupont
    - SN Pale Ale
    and
Orval as the wild card (no pun intended. Maybe. :sunglasses:)

“Pretend you are introducing an Alien to the world of beer “

“…this isn't necessarily your top 5 beers, rather, beers that you think are great examples of the style, consistent, etc.”

Trying to be consistent with the above:

    1. Most popular beer style by far worldwide: American Adjunct Lager

An eponymous beer here would be Budweiser. If I were permitted to suggest an AAL beer brand I prefer it would be Yuengling Lord Chesterfield.

    2. An early US craft beer scene beer:

I would recommend Sierra Nevada Pale Ale for this category.

    3. Most popular craft beer style(s) today: Hoppy Beers

I would recommend two sub-styles here: West Coast sub-style and Juicy/Hazy sub-style. My selection would be Fat Head’s Head Hunter IPA and Tired Hands Alien Church.

    4. For the fifth beer I would select a non-Pale beer since not all beers are yellow – amber in color. I think a Porter would be a good style choice and I would suggest Founders Porter or Fullers Porter.

    Cheers!

You’re introducing an alien to beer and you give him nothing but N/A? I’m willing to bet you’re in for a probe.

I like this list a lot, but I'd go Founder's Imperial Stout all day over Bell's Expedition.

    Tough. Think I'd go:

    1. Alma Mader's Premient. A clean Czech lager with some hop play at the back.
    - Distro option: Pilsner Urquell

    2. Alma Mader's Contextual. A clean dark Czech lager. See how they enjoy roasty flavors without handing them a huge stout.

    3. Bell's Two Hearted Ale. A simple, clean IPA. Pliny comes to mind if available too.

    4. KC Bier's Hefeweizen. An introduction to German yeast, yet still mild.
    -Distro option: Live Oak's Hefeweizen.

    5. Ozark's BDCS. A straight forward imperial stout.
    - Distro option: Founder's Imperial Stout or Oskar Blue's Ten FIDY.

Would consider subbing #4 for a helles, but think hefeweizen would provide a more diverse taste within my line up. Tried to sub in some local options, with a similar distro equivalent.

Tempted to swap out #2 for a saison, but figured it would help ease the drinker into roasty notes without handing them a 10% (or more) ABV beer.

Tough to not include SN's Pale Ale, which is the first beer I thought of, but wanted to start them on craft lagers. Perhaps sub #3 for a more approachable 'hop level', and give them SN's Pale Ale.
