    I might catch hell for asking this basic question, I've never homebrewed (really want to) I'm just very curious - what are these called and how were they used?

    Looks like an old mash-paddle to me, used to stir the mash in the mash-tun.

    Thanks! I knew it had to be something pretty basic, I just see it around (southern tier logo, etc) and had to ask.

    Mash paddle as answered above. Some small breweries use something similar today no pictures of those, but have seen them.

    Homebrewers have small versions - Mash paddle.
