I'm headed to Narragansett area (including Newport) with a group of guys and want to check out a few breweries. Other than the obvious Narragansett, what are the best breweries down there? Thanks in advance!

Proclamation in Kingston. About 10 mins from Narragansett. In a funky industrial park, once your surrounded by decorative stone you're there. My favorite RI brewery.

Narragansett beer isn't brewed in Narragansett, but mostly in NY, FYI. No brewery to visit.
    +1 on Proclomation.

Whaler's is also a cool place to hang out, located in the village of Peacedale between Narragansett and Proclamation. In the basement of a mill building, a lot of space with darts, pool table and seating areas. The beer is not as good as you'll get at Proclamation, but it appears right now they have a lot of styles: Berliner weisse, pale ale, Irish red ale, imperial pumpkin, saison and a tripel.

I second Tilted Barn in Exeter as well, just be warned they are only open Saturdays from 1-4pm.

Zzzzlumber from Proclamation is a great BA Stout. It should be tapping in the next few days.

I picked up a growler of the non-BA version last weekend, it should still be on unless there was a run. BA version to be released later this month I believe.

But the headline this weekend is Tendril is back on, bros. First time in like a year...

As mentioned above, the best beer in the area is easily Proclamation, especially this weekend with Tendril, Zzzlumber and more on. They will fill any growlers, up to 72oz per person (stupid RI law). Tilted Barn is also awesome, and is less than five minutes away from Proclamation. As for hanging out at the brewery, Whaler's is excellent, but the beer isn't quite on the level of the other two. There are a number of BYOB restaurants in the area too, and Crazy Burger in Narragansett will take 10% off your bill if you bring Whaler's growlers.

Proclamation is my fav as well.

Newport storm does their tastings on Friday and you can try their Thomas Tew rum as well, which is a great rum. Check their FB page, as I think you have to be 1 of the first 50 to sign up. Brewery is open every day but Tuesday for tours.

Whalers. South kingstown, is also a great brewery with some really good beers, I am really enjoying their East Coast IPA. Sons of Liberty whiskey is within walking distance and I highly recommend their spirits.

Tilted barn. Exeter, RI. Definitely on the verge of being the next big thing in New England IMO. Unfortunately they are only open to the public on Saturdays 1-4.

    This should help:

Since I live a few minutes into MA from Providence, so I have sampled most of what RI has (except for my refusal to buy anything from Narragansett). Proclamation, Tilted Barn, Newport Storm (and you can tour the distillery if you like rum but it will cost some cash), Grey Sail I would say are the picks of the litter and the best bang for the buck. Ravenous is pretty good, but I've had a couple of "misses" from there. Personally, I wouldn't bother with Crooked Current, FoolProof is hit or miss with my taste buds, and I find Bucket to be pretty average/slightly below. Not sure if Trinity is the same since the former head brewer is now at Revival (housed, I believe, at Brutopia), but we have noticed a marked decline in clientele recently as we are in the area frequently.

Guys thanks again this is awesome. I'd say it sounds like Proclamation to try it out, then Whaler's to hang out for a while, especially since they are so close. Then maybe also Tilted Barn because it is so good and not that far away. The map above makes it look like Proclamation and Whalers are wicked close, hen tilted barn is not that far away? Is it really only 5 minutes from Proclamation?

Is a visit to Proclamation pretty typical? (take a small tour, try some samples, etc.?)

Proclamation is a small brewery inside a warehouse, not much to tour. Definitely check their website for hours before you go. Whalers is a good time too, havent visited tilted barn yet but have heard good things. If you have the time, I recommend making the trek to Westerly to visit Grey Sail and then Beer'd just over the border in CT, bout 25-30 from gansett but worth the trip!

Agreed Proclamation is hang out and try a couple of samples in the brewery. Although I haven't been to the new taproom. Don't think that they have anything formal for tours.

Proclamation, then whalers is the plan. If you are there on a Saturday, add Tilted Barn.

Then post-brewery hours you can hit up Mews Tavern in Wakefield, they typically have some locals on tap.

Yea mews is pretty good, if you head to newport storm there are better craft bars than mews. PJs, Wharf Pub, and Norey's. You could even throw Malt and Tavern on Broadway into the mix, all within a couple minutes walk of each other.
