You should def visit LoneRider, Big Boss, then Natty Greene's (in that order). If you have time, Gizmo has greatly improved from the old Roth days.

Send him some of Duck-Rabbit's while you're at it -- that and Smuttynose are two of my favorite examples of the style. Wish I'd been able to try Natty Greene's!

Brent, I think Matt Monroe in the Triad Beer Meetup group on Facebook might be able to she'd some light on this.

I messaged him the other day but have yet to get a response. I am surprised there is not more buzz about this. Guess the Triad market just isn't that big on sours.

Brent, where did you message me? Sorry, I haven't gotten any messages on any of my social media outlets :/. I promise I'm not ignoring! As far as the sour release, I work at the pub, so I'm not really kept in the loop on releases from the production facility. I will try to get some info and pass it along to you all.

As others have previously stated, no macrobreweries have a stake in Natty Greene's. I'm the cellarman at the Greensboro pub, so stop in and say hi! My name is Matt Monroe.

Thanks for the quick reply here, Matt. I tried to send you a message on Facebook but obviously you never got it. I have enjoyed all of Natty's sours but they often pop up without warning. I am hoping to pick up a few bottles this time so I was trying to figure out where/when they will be available. Anything you can find out would be greatly appreciated.

    Brent,

Try shooting me another message on Facebook. I want to make sure I remember to get back to you when I find out anything about this year's sour release. I've heard the same things you have on Twitter, a September 21 release at the pubs. We will also be celebrating our 9th anniversary that day with a free show and the tapping of our 9th Anniversary Session IPA dryhopped with nine different hops and our Vienna-style lager, Autumnfest. Hope you can make it out!

You need not fear Natty Greene's. They are a legit North Carolina craft brewer based out of Greensboro. They have some pretty good beers and one bad one (IMHO, of course). I think you should definitely take them up on their overtures to your club.

    Hello (new member here),
I've been a fan of Natty Greenes for some time and just went down to Greensboro and had a tour of the original facility (respectable operation). However, I live in Montgomery County MD and I was wondering if you could please tell me where you saw the beer to purchase and if you've seen it since.

    Thanks - Jamie

Many places in Northern Virginia carry them now. I see if at Harris Teeter, Westover Market to name a couple

Natty Greene's is probably the most plentiful beer here in the Triad and because it is so widely available (I mean every grocery store and restaurant in the area carries Natty Greene's) I think they get a bit underrated. Very dependable and solid beers. I've yet to have one of their brews that I didn't enjoy at least somewhat.

By reading this I would assume that they are mediocre at best  Solid, dependable IMO are code words for eh....
Never hit the Raleigh location, but the Greensboro brews IMO are forgettable, and brewers skills are different. Liberty Tap House in High Point makes some terrific brews, the Myrtle Beach location does not.

So, there is a reason why you saw NG case stacked in every Harris Teeter. Two regional managers for HT ran into the owner in the Outer Banks. Eventually, the HT guys realized that a ton of people from NoVA and DC went down there to vacation. They drank Natty Greenes down there, and wanted it back home. The HT guys helped get NG signed with NoVA and DC distributors and agreed to do case stacks of their beer in every store (something they have never done before). Pretty crazy, actually.

I am finally getting a chance to visit their Raleigh brewery next week. Can't wait! All the NG guys are awesome. I see Bob at least once a month.

I'd have to agree whole heartedly with your sentiments both about Nasty's in Greensboro and Liberty in High Point. The Brewers Kettle in High Point pours quite a bit of Liberty's great brews (tipping my hat to both Todd and David) and yawning most everything that Nasty Greene's brews in Greenesboro. Just my 2.768 cents. Cheerz !!

I don't know the Natty Greene brewers/owners/powers that be in Greensboro (or Raleigh for that matter) even though I live a mile or so from the South Elm Street location. I've been to the brew pub a dozen or so times and I've never been wowed by anything they have on tap (or anything from their bomber cellar series for that matter). For ME, I'd rather drive west 20 miles to Winston Salem to a brewery that brews Sexual Chocolate and Jade, then I would to a brewery that makes AVERAGE (at best) brews that draw Budweiser and Miller light drinkers into their web. Just my low life opinion. And as a PS ..... just because a brewery/distributor stacks the aisles with a brew, doesn't legitimize it (take ABinBev as an example during Super Bowl weekend). Think about it !!

Ah, so they brew Sexual Chocolate year round, and always have it on tap then? Got it. Oh, you probably mean that you'd rather drink the beers from a brewery that makes the one beer you think is awesome, but not actually drink that awesome beer. While that makes no sense, it's your prerogative. (This is not a knock on Foothills, I think their year round hoppy beers are solid).

Natty Greene sells more beer in North Carolina than any other North Carolina brewery. Maybe their year round beers aren't for you. That's fine. Those are tailored to a wider audience. But I've had some great stuff that is brewpub only. And their sour series gets better and better.

No, case stacks don't mean much. It means that the distributor sales rep has a good relationship with that store owner. Or that distributor has a good reputation with that chain store. It can mean many things. Just trying to answer the OP's question about why it was stacked everywhere.

    NO actually

LoL, I find it ironically funny that someone from Virginia defends a half ass brewery in North Carolina. What, you can't score Hardywood Park, Williamsburg Aleworks, or Parkway Brewing (to name just a few) that you need to defend a mediocre brewery some 3,000 yards from where I live and know firsthand? I'm going to make assumptions here and guess that ummmm you are involved intimately with the owner/sales rep/2 dollar hooker behind the bar? Evidently I've raised your hackles and that's alright by me. Natty Greenes is a sub par brewery with sub par brews. If you disagree then evidently you are blowing someone's whistle. CHEERZ !
