I think most thoughtful people saw this one coming...

    http://www.courant.com/opinion/lett...spect-what-about-nurses-2015-01-28-story.html

"The recent controversy over beer names [Jan. 24, Business, "Gandhi-Bot To Get Reboot"] got me thinking about City Steam's most popular beer, "The Naughty Nurse." As a registered nurse, I am stung each time I hear or read that name.

My profession suffers from sterotypical images promulgated by television and movies. One is the mean battle-axe intent on doing harm; the other is an angel, an inhuman, perfect fantasy.

The reality is that nurses are educated, smart, hardworking people who have made the courageous decision to choose and persist in a caring profession. All of us from birth to the end will be cared for by nurses.

I challenge the folks at City Steam to hold a contest to choose a different name for their beer. "The Trashy Teacher?" No, that won't work. "The Lusty Lawyer"? No, that won't work either.

Truth be told, that half-dressed, powder-puff, cartoon image clutching a glass of beer has nothing whatsoever to do with my profession. I think City Steam has co-opted nursing and I do not think the name was chosen to honor nurses. If your daughter or son chose nursing as a profession, would you want to promote that image? I think not. It's past time to drop the archaic and insulting name."

What a joke. These people that are so offended need keep their opinions to themselves and stop trying to get their name in the media. I challenge Cora to go find something else to do with her free time than worry about a beer label.

To quote the great Jacobim Mugatu: "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!"

I don't want to live on this planet anymore, who gives a crap what the name of a beer is? Ignore it if it offends you you are literally corrupting the idea of the right to free speech.

Honestly, brewers can not win. You either offend someone or get sued by someone for whatever name you come up with.

That stereo type has been around forever and if it really bothered you that much you probably would have chosen a different career. I am sure that the satire was meant to be fun and lighthearted, why does everyone have to play the "PC" card so damn often nowadays.

If I owned a brewery, I'd be creating a "Get over yourself IPA". (Some) people suck lately. Or maybe they've always sucked and social media makes it easier to share your butthurt.

I would really like to know how the nursing profession "suffers from stereotypical images promulgated by television and movies"? I'm serious, how? Do people rethink becoming a nurse because of a Halloween costume or beer label? Do people go into the hospital and say, "Hey, what is wrong with this place? None of the nurses are wearing thigh highs and short skirts? What kind of medical facility is this?" I'm not trying to be insensitive here but I feel that freedom of speech is a sacred thing and we don't need to regress to the 1950's Leave It To Beaver days. Please don't take this the wrong way but if this label offends you, fine, don't buy the beer, hell, don't buy any of their beer. There are hundreds of beers that have edgy labels, some contain good beer, some don't. I'm more offended by trash in the bottle than trash on the label.

If I ever open a brewery, I plan to have the beer names be as offensive as possible. And if somebody complains about it, I'll make an imperial version that's even more offensive. Cause fuck em.

This just seems a bit over the top that it reads like satire. If not satire maybe someone should clue her in that the beer was named after a dude; even though the label depicts otherwise.

I'm surprised nurses have time to worry about this, what with being so busy with all the babies coming into the hospital wasted after going out and buying Founders Breakfast Stout because of the label.

The name of this beer is a reference to ****s, not nurses. If you don't understand this, then I don't know what else to say.

Exactly, and The Courant, none-the-less. Hell, three days out of four, my copy never makes it out of the plastic bag. And when I do read it, I'm not reading letters to the editor, and no one else is either.

It's not like there's any legal requirement to change the name. Brewers can name their beer whatever they want, for the most part. "Free speech" does not equate to "free from consequences" and it cuts both ways. If you disagree, you have the same ability to publicly support the offending brewer as this nurse does to raise awareness to the fact that she feels marginalized. It's just a business decision, and some brewers don't have the time/resources to deal with this or gamble on selling what they've already invested in. However, Clown Shoes went through something similar and doesn't seem to be worse off for sticking to their guns.

correction: they decided to change it after talking to indian-americans in their local community. there was no significant market pressure (gandhi bot sells out immediately), and the lawsuit was supposedly going to be filed in india (ie it's totally irrelevant). what NEBCO did was very respectable, and it's lazy to taint praise of it with smear shit like the above quote.

that said, i find naughty nurse pretty offensive. not sure whether or not it harms nurses on a day to day basis (bit doubtful), but it's as offensive as like, "sexy maid," or "demeaned, objectified object who exists for my personal arousal." so, take that for whatever it's worth to you.
