Going to outer banks next week. What brews should I look out for/places go to? Any NC brews I should seek out for? IPA fan. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
OBX Brewing Station. Didn't have their IPA when I went, but it had good ratings. Only bottled beer they had was Vitis Reductus which was a barrel aged brett porter with muscadine grapes. The muscadine grapes were reduced to 1/3 their size and didn't make it a super sweet beer. I don't know if they are still around there but its worth getting a bottle or two. Their pale ale was good enough for me to take home a growler. They have awesome growlers, very similar to a hill farmstead growler. They serve food there and it always looked so good in the pictures online, but it wasn't very good when we went, but all of the beers were. Full Moon Cafe is in Manteo which is to the left right before you cross the bridge over to Nags Head. It's a small brewery/restaurant and has delicious food. They have around 5-7 of their beers on tap. Chips is probably the best bottle shop depending on where you're staying. Don't expect to find a ton of stuff down there so if you have some IPA's that you love, I'd bring a few with you to be safe. Brine and Bottle is supposed to be a really good restaurant. Their fried pickles are supposed to be excellent There's plenty of stuff about OBX and the NC coast in the Southeast forum and there's also plenty of BA's who have more experience in the OBX than me too
While i'm a Chips supporter through and through - you can find some gems and a decent tap list at TRIO around milepost 4
If you like IPAs I'd reccomend Ska Modus Hoperandi (CO), Sweetwater IPA (GA), Foothills Hoppyum (NC), Mother Earth Sisters of the Moon(NC)...shouldn't be hard to find any of these.
Agreed. If you're looking for hard-to-find beers down at OBX, you won't have any luck. That's why I'm bringing PtE, Westbrook IPA, Lunch, and Pure Hoppiness down with me next week!
Luckily westbrook was canning their IPA on the day they released the BAMC's so I got a 6 pack of their IPA that was canned that day. It is a highly underrated IPA
I was down there 3 weeks ago and I was nicely surprised by Chip's selection. I was able to grab two bombers of the Mother Earth Windowpane series, they had Double Trouble that was only 3 weeks old, and Stone RuinTen was in abundance. I wasn't hurting for quality beer.
Drive over to Manteo and check out Full Moon Cafe and Brewery. Their brewery is inside the tiny pub right behind the bar. I was there the first time a couple of weeks ago and I'll certainly be going back. The guy behind the bar said they brew every other day (and keg the other days). I had a Paddy Wagon Irish Red followed by their Devils Own IPA along with a chopped BBQ sandwich which one of the best I've ever tasted living over 50 years in NC. http://www.thefullmooncafe.com/gallery.html
Chips (also a location in Moyock on the way in from the north): best selection Trio: decent selection, beers on tap, food is pretty good Sweet T's: beers on tap (maybe 5 or so), singles to go) Outer Banks Brewing Station: brewpub experience Full Moon Saloon: if you're in Manteo Weeping Radish (Jarvisburg, on the way in. Have heard good and bad.)
I just recently went to Weeping Radish and I would say to skip it - I had gone a few years back in the old location and thought it was better then... Neither the food nor the beer were anything special.
Heading to OBX on Saturday and just wanted to bump up this thread in case anyone had any new suggestions. Also wanted to see if anyone knew if Chips or another place had Founders Mango Magnifico?
Trio had some mango magnifico last night when I was there. $14 a bottle. Only a couple bottles left on the shelf though. Not sure about Chips.
