Currently if you brew over 25k barrels you must use a Distributor, the new law would double that to 50k barrels. That’s a significant change and the winners would be Old Mecklenburg first up, as they brew to about capacity now, and now have the room to expand as was their intention a few years ago. That might mean I won’t have to drive to Charlotte for their beers anymore. Laws can be changed and breweries like OMB and Red Oak were quite vocal and diligent about recruiting support fo their cause. It’s a ridiculous law anyway.

I disagree with moving this to a sub forum, this isn’t just a N.C. thing, there’s other states with similar laws. Change can happen, but this should be where BAs from all regions will see it, it’s short sighted imo.

The issue is a state imposed production limit for breweries that self distribute. Raising that limit to 50K barrels from 25K barrels significantly helps Olde Mecklenburg and Red Oak, both specialists in German style beers. It's a good move that finally sticks it in the face of the North Carolina Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association. It's about time. In my mind it is the only good thing done by this current North Carolina Senate.

More jobs, and better beer making its way around again. Breweries have a right to determine their own growth path and control their own product. That limit was just nonsense to begin with.

Things can change and NC politics are routinely rated as one of the most corrupt, and burying it here is bs. This isn’t the only state with asinine laws on the books. Seeing some success inspires others to get involved, it should be on the main forum, because this is a big deal.

I dealt with European exporters who said selling beer in America is like dealing with 50 different crazy countries.

I bet so, there’s no reason why distribution of beer and alcohol and any different than our screwed up heath care system. It’s all up for grabs and for sale. State run, private, it’s all over the place.

You should have made the title and original post more general if that’s what you were going for. You made a topic about a NC state law with no mention or discussion about other states until it was moved (for the record, I did not report your post).

Maybe so, but I qualified it too, it’s a big win for NC brewers, but there’s other states saddled with archaic laws, or those self serving.

Why would anyone report the post.? I thought it was perfectly suited for a general discussion of statutes changing around the country and statutes that need changing. In my estimation, the word "should" is always a bit preachy..

I’m just stunned that this horribly slanted towards corporate interests legislature would even consider this. Unless it’s part of the bill to poison pill the abc stores (which is actually a good idea, they want to shed the salaries of state employees to make up for all the giveaways but some choices and competition would be nice)

And it has been signed! Next up abolishing the ABC...I can dream.

North Carolina is a ridiculous state. I have been living here for a long time and even Pennsylvania isn't as crooked as North Carolina.

Next bill that needs to pass that effects beer drinkers is H536 which would do away with the totally stupid law that you can't walk away from the bar with more than 1 beer in your hand.

So if you are getting yourself and your wife, or friend a beer, you have to make two trips, from bar to where ever you are sitting.

Granted many tasting rooms mostly ignore this, especially if you are a regular, but some are very strict, probably because some ALE agent has fined them in the past, but a few will actually come out from behind the bar and carry the other beer to my wife. This has happened at Sierra Nevada, outside on the patio by the firepit.

Technically the USA is called that because it is 50 United States. Like the Euro Zone sort of.
