    They use gamification techniques to get people hooked, so some people really think they can "win" Untapped. Honestly I think it's wrong to gamify the act of consuming alcohol, but I suppose its nothing new either.

    What constitutes being "made differently"? A change in recipe? If so, how substantial? Technique? Equipment? Ingredients vary year to year and barrel aged beer can vary based on the wood, so do those add up to make a difference?

    I agree 100% that Untappd is annoying in that tickers are driving the separate entries - but I also think it can be interesting to see different scores for vintages of the "same" beer. I think the right UI would likely be an optional filter so scores "roll up" to a master beer (no unique check-ins) but vintages could be separated to see trends over time.

    Personally, I'd like to see how this batch of Hop JuJu "compares" to previous years (knowing full well it's not at all a scientific comparison).

    IMO, change in recipe, ingredient additions and/or technique should be quite substantial, coupled with the brewer giving some sort of indication that vintage to vintage, a brew should be viewed as a unique animal.

    For example, it makes sense to me that there is a new entry for Spirit Beast every year. However, a new entry for Dark Apparition, (despite any unintended consequences), or even Oro Negro or Mystic Mama (even in light of intended changes to pepper and/or hop ratios), seems excessive. In that sense, I'm really glad we don't have a dozen different entries for those beers here on BA.

    I obviously like the idea of a simple, single beer name to rate--if a brewer wanted their beer to be a new product, they should/would name it differently and not leave it up to the public to create new additions for every vintage. Incoming slippery slope argument: often a beer can be released and re-released multiple times that year, should we have a January versus an October vintage too?

    I do like the idea of seeing changes in experiences year to year for a specific beer, but that can often be partly attributed to nostalgia, and palate shift. But I agree that if they do engineer a way to click on a beer and choose the vintage for that specific beer, that would definitely be a great middle ground. As it is right now, though, I'm pretty happy with the way BA does it.

    I don't mean to keep this thread off topic but relevant to the current discussion...I deleted my Untappd account a few weeks ago and it's probably the best thing I've done since I got into beer. After you got to a certain point it felt like a chore / game and now I just buy whatever the hell I want that sounds good. I found myself staring at a wall of singles in a bottle shop or a tap list in a local bar with my phone in hand just searching everything up trying to find something I hadn't tried before that also had good reviews instead of just grabbing what sounded interesting. I completely agree with Sabtos post above mine that the vintages are out of control and is just increasing the competitiveness within the app. Untappd should be a tool not a sport. It's much more enjoyable putting the ticking aside and just ordering a damn beer at the bar without reaching for your phone.

    @Josbor11

    I am SO close to "letting go" of untapped … It served a purpose for a while, allowing me to refine what I liked and avoiding what I didn’t… But over time, beers I hated I now love and beers I loved I don’t, anymore. Times change, beers change, tastes change. It’s kind of annoying to check in beers anyway… Perhaps I will give my last toast to untapped this weekend…!

    Don't have to go as far as deleting it. The nearby and menu utilities are really good. Just don't think about it as a collector log.

    On topic .. . Seems like DankHouse got a crowler machine. I hope that they establish hard limits so the trade Bros don't empty all the Couch Kush'n supply

    Untappd is as useful as you make it. I love it to see what my friends are drinking, and being in Cleveland there are a lot of verified venues that update their menus daily, which is really nice. If people are chasing ticks to the point where it's dishonest it's not really gonna bug me in any way.

    Anyone know anything about Crooked Pecker Brewing? Came across them on Rich Armon's blog and they only have a FB page. Brewery in Chagrin Falls specializing in NEIPAs. Their Facebook page only shows pictures of their beers but nothing about opening date, etc. Anyone know anything about them, the brewer, the space, etc.? The pictures of the beer look excellent.[IMG]

    I remember when I was at Lizardville for their original BCBS event towards the end of the summer, there was a group there talking about making NEIPA's in Chagrin Falls. I believe it was an older gentleman and his son, and another guy had said he tried their beers and they were phenomenal. They said they were looking for a space to open up a brewery there, so I'm guessing it may be them? I'm sure they're still a ways away from opening though, if they ever do.

    Terrestrial's newest NEIPA is actually really really good. Called Fanboi, I'd highly recommend trying! Also, the Terrestrial x Noble Beast collab, Generic Phish Reference, was spectacular. It's been on draft for a few weeks now, so try it before it kicks. Talked to Sean of Noble Beast this weekend and he said he'll probably be brewing more NEIPAs. Think it's right up there with you Masthead fans!
