I'll uhh, wait and see what the crowd thinks. Can't say their brews were super impressive when I went. Name + branding is funny though.

Craft beer, where murder jokes are cool but fart and wiener jokes get everyone in a tizzy.

That would seem to explain why everyone's golden child brewery named their flagship IPA after the act of killing someone and cutting off their head...

PSA for anyone interested or coming to OCBA WW Fest this Sat.....I'm dumping Lupulin Cloud. Weird fermentation flaw. Not having it. Drain pour.
Dagobrah System is tasty and will be pouring though. Thanks!

Not sure yet. As of this moment I still have 7 beers for 6 tap handles...

Not sure how this will be, but I think they really nailed it with Haze Jude. So perhaps there's some optimism with this one?

Upon further "consideration" we have decided to add:
    -ThunderLips
    -Melk Stout
-Pancake Breakfast (wee heavy aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels 11%)

    Hope that helps a bit

Hello everyone. Just wanted to jump in and let anyone in the Dayton area or anyone who might visit the Dayton area know that my brewery Branch & Bone Artisan Ales will be open soon and while we have a strong focus on mixed fermentation we will also have plenty of opaque and flavorful Pale Ale/IPA/DIPA beers on tap. We love funk, hops, and barrel aging so that is essentially the direction a lot of our lineup will be headed. We make some very interesting Berliner style beers as well with different ingredients. I hope you'll check us out and follow along. Links below and we also have an instagram page @branchandboneales

    Thanks!

Just stopped and had Double Fleeb from Masthead on tap. It was a solid beer, but it wasn't exactly extraordinary for that style. I expected a little more given all the talk about their NE IPA's as of late. Again, still very good though.

My issue with Masthead thus far, and it's my same issue with MANY of these breweries trying to do this style, is they're leaning for too heavily on the hops (I know that sounds crazy). Basically, they're just bombarding the beer with as much hops as they can physically hold in the vessel, then doubling down by dry-hopping the hell out of it. This causes two issues for me. 1) Astringent hop flavor on the back end and sometimes a chalky mouthfeel as well. This is why the word "Green" has been the hot buzzword for this style over the last 6 months +. This is somewhat fixed by giving the beer time in the can, which isn't ideal, but I can accept it as long as the beer becomes GREAT, once that hop matter settles a little...

that's where my second issue comes with these beers. So because they are leaning so heavily on the hops, there isn't as much emphasis on the actual beer itself, so once you wait for the "green-ness" to go away, you have a significantly less flavorful beer, with really no fruity character anymore. This to me is the one thing that continues to set some of the heavy hitters from NE apart from most of the field.

So to me, what makes a perfect NEIPA is when the body is right, and when the hops are used to accentuate the yeast character... not when the hops are used to murder any other flavors the underlying beer would otherwise have.

    @Gibspeed

I didn’t get any astringency myself, but an almost muddled, perhaps a little chalkiness as you had mentioned could be the reason why it didn’t quite hit the target for me. I get a decent supply of NE IPA’s from Trillium, Treehouse and other NE breweries fairly often and especially with Trillium, the hops and flavor just POP. It’s almost like a potency and saturation of the hop in the beer that makes this style stand out. Trillium also tends to not be afraid to actually bitter the beer, either, which is key IMO. As much as people think you don’t need those IBU’s, it is what balances the entire beer even when "juicy". Also, good brewing practices of course. Finishing fermentation under pressure, naturally carbonating, avoiding oxidation, etc... All significantly change the final product in the glass.

If I had to guess, a big flaw in many NE IPA’s tend to be the water profile as well. Brewers are pushing chlorides to get the mouthfeel (along with loading oats, flaked wheat, etc…) based on what is online, but excessive calcium chloride does get chalky and I pick that up a bit in so many examples. Brew a NE IPA with a west coast water profile with a slight bump in the chlorides and you really get a better end result, for sure. At least in my experience.

But again, Masthead has a solid NE IPA, but it’s not on any elite level (yet), that’s for sure.

Highlighted where I think you're dead on, awesome points. And I also don't want to come off like I don't like Masthead, I love what they're doing, I just think these couple things are what keep them from being top tier quite yet. Hopefully they get there.

It's interesting to me though, thinking about the saturation piece, that Tubes for me was by far their best effort and that used cryo'd hops, which I'm sure could impact that saturation piece. Who knows though.

Aaaaand it'd been canceled. Lots of backlash on the event page. Wondering what their response will be.

It may be a solid beer, which is a shame. I haven't had anything yet I liked from them, but I was willing to give this one a try, OJ name or not.

Where are you seeing the backlash? I can't seem to find anything on their Facebook about the event anymore.
