Platform Pacific Dew is hitting stores, that's a NE IPA or so they say.

Had both Pacific Dew and Astro Dwarf on draft this past weekend, labeled as NEIPA and "hazy" they both were innacurate representations of the NEIPA style, although they were decent beers. Hopefully someone in Ohio can figure it out other than hoof, the market is certainly there.

Pacific Dew from Platform was not good. Not just as a NE IPA (nowhere close... just stop it, Platform...) but as an IPA in general. Overall it was a strange flavor profile. Beer was practically Pilsner clear, too, haha.

They really just keep throwing darts and hope things stick with their beers. Maybe they should just stop trying to release 15 new beers per month and concentrate on a few good ones or something.

That's pretty much how I feel about Platform.

They use all the typical tropes of trendy beer to sell people some lackluster crap, then by the time everyone figured out the beer was no good they've already moved on to the next one.

I've not had a single hoppy beer from Platform I liked. They need to slow down and focus.

If I was a big fan of NEIPA I'd be upset with them as this is doing nothing to help legitimize the style.

exactly.....strange name for a NE IPA too. Pacific dew? glad I didn't waste my money this weekend. Mosaic mist was decent, was hoping dew was even better. guess not.

Pacific Dew was horrible. IMO, the only Platform IPA that has been worth re-brewing was Amarillo Fog.

In better news, I heard another batch of Peach Spreader is in the works.
But I also heard it may be aging in Chardonnay barrels.

And has anyone discussed Platform opening another location in Cincinnati? Dudes need to slow the funk down and focus on quality unless the goal is to cash in sometime soon.

Right? But cashing in is exactly what I expect them to do as soon as they get an offer.

I don't know any of the Platform people personally, but yeah, they are expanding at a pace that's going to need a huge money injection to keep up.

Same goes for Rhinegeist. With the source of their initial capital I wouldn't be surprised if they were looking to sell at some point also.

Man, this thread is so rough, which side do I take? Old money or new money? It's so cool to be traditional, but then that's so dad, don't I want to be cool and piss my dad off by drinking inconsistent beer that I actually like? I'm so confused!

Seriously though, this thread is in support of NE IPA from what I can tell from the origin, so let the discussion support that, if you want to shit on it, defer to the new to ohio thread, geez.

To date amarillo on draft has been the best ohio take on the NEIPA and I have had most in the area.
I have had a lot of hoof but which ones do people consider NE style? I've had a lot of their IPAsand cant really say that I find them a true NE style.

They used to be great examples. Back before ticketing began, and for short while after, Konkey, Blabe, and Musk were all hazy, but had a distinct hop profile and a nice amount of bitterness. A lot of the early stuff reminded me of Alchemist, Lawsons, and Hill Farmstead IPAs outside of the original Draggonsaddle and South of Eleven, which were clear, very hop forward west coast styles.

I agree that they are no longer true representations, but then again, it kind of a semantics debate since so many of the current takes are all extremely turbid, juicy, sweet yeast bombs. I think that the ones that have done the best job staying close to the "old school" versions ( bridging the gap so to speak) are Trillium, Tired Hands, and Bissell Brothers.

Kind of back to the thread (kind of) M-43 from Old Nation isn't an Ohio beer, but isn't far away or really hard to obtain.

For anyone really looking for a more "old school" NEIPA, Cult Following from the BottleHouse really does it well. Not super hazy just for the sake of haze. Also the same approach R Shea NEIPA's usually take. Supposedly they'll have a new version of their Constitution series this week as well, which should be awesome. I think they all have their place though. Just had a Dork yesterday from the last HH release and it's one of my favorite they've put out.

Yep, i believe the cause was them cheaping out on yeast and amount of hops used. They were using a very pricy strain that was just about perfect and dry hopping to the extreme. Batch 1 Roller Blabe drank like Heady but better. When they switched to the new cheaper yeast, which i believe is a fresh pitch each time, everything started tasting the same. I'd still say they are very much NE IPA's though. Anything ive had labeled that from Platform, Rhinegeist, or Land Grant was 100% unrecognizable to the style. Mosaic mist tasted like straight up yeast cake, completely undrinkable.

Keep an eye out for Branch and Bone in Dayton dropping in the near future. Their brewer has been dialing in his ipas for a while now, and are to the style and up their with Brew Gentlemen, HF, and Bissell.

Platform had one in the brewpub called "I Like Beer" that I thought was a solid attempt at the style. The stuff they've put into cans has been pretty bad.

I've talked about this a lot though, and I really don't think beer nerds are their target market. The general populace loves them and their branding is money.

I remember hearing about that. What was the problem that messed up the cans?

I recall them saying it didn't turn out hazy on Facebook - which is laughable. Either way, that was a fruited IPA, so not quite true NE style.

I'll also second Cult Following from Bottle House. Great beer.
