hey guys im looking to get a barrel for some brewing activities. I did see the Forum on some barrels, but i was wondering if anyone on here had access to some or has one and are willing to get rid of it. Or if someone can point me in the right direction. Also, i live in Western North Carolina if someone is close or knows a place to get a barrel. i want one that is between 5-12gallon. thanks!
I'd try to hit up wineries in CA. Otherwise you'll have to eat a hefty shipping cost. These guys cycle through them a few times a year. It's an average price: http://www.farmhousebrewingsupply.com/used-liquor-oak-barrels-5-10-15-gallon/
If you call your local wineries/distilleries and inquire they will likely have barrels to sell. id say around 150 would be a solid price.
Not sure if they carry "homebrew sizes" but here are two barrel brokers located in NC.. http://www.knoxbarrels.com/ http://www.staveworldwide.com/
Are you close to Asheville? Plenty of breweries there that I'm sure won't mind telling you where to get a good barrel. Can you only use a barrel once to age a beer in, or can it be used for multiple brew batches? Just trying to think if it's worth it for me to invest in one or not.. @koopa I'm digging the new avatar, btw!
Thanks! I'm fortunate / obsessed enough to have 5 great kits presently.... 1969 Ludwig Silver Sparkle 3 ply maple circa '99 - '01 Pearl MMX custom 4 ply maple in a natural wood finish '05 Pearl MMX custom 4 ply maple double bass kit in midnight fade (current profile picture) circa '05 Pearl Reference in twilight fade circa '99 - '01 Pearl Masterworks custom made in "Reference Sizes" with my favorite "Scuba Blue Tamo Ash" finish
Damn... that is awesome! I've been playing for about 17 years now and have been using the same mahogany Ludwig 6-piece set pictured in my avatar. I also invested in a Roland V-Tour electric set which I absolutely love, and keeps things a little more quiet around the house. @Schwarzvald sorry for veering off topic!
haha its cool guys! and thanks for the direction. And i plan to use the barrel at least 3 times..maybe four if i can.
From experience I'd shoot for 3 times for "clean" beers as each successive barrel aging is going to draw out more of the oak and spirit flavor, even when soaking the barrel with fresh spirit between agings. After that turn it into a bug factory and make some fun sour/funky oak barrel beers. Balcones Distillery (I think out of Waco, TX?) uses small barrels for their distilling and I've used a few of their little 5.5 gallon barrels with a lot of delicious results. I think morebeer distributes their freshly dumped barrels, although I've just bought them from large purchases my local brew clubs have made.
They have these used 5 gallon whiskey barrels on amazon for $135 including shipping right now 5 Gallon Whisky Barrel
It's an Amazon link. The barrel is from homebrewing.org and it looks like only a whisky barrel. I'm actually surprised that the deal is still working (just checked). I would have ordered one but my wife is forcing me to clean the garage first.
They're from Homebrewing.com.... homebrewing.org is Adventures in Homebrewing, a great homebrew shop here in MI. They currently do not have 5g whiskey barrels, but occasionally do.. Homebrewing.com is some shop based out of Texas.. I know nothing more about them..
