Headed to a German restaurant tonite, where I have the hardest time finding a beer I like. Can someone make a good recommendation? Normally I like hops (yay IPA), but find that hard to find in German beers. I'm not a fan of heavy malt and really dislike the clove tastes I find in many German beers. Help or I'll just pick a Dunkel Weizen. Was looking and choices and wondered if I would like Vitus.

I was considering Schneider Aventinus, but some reviews had me worried about the cloviness. Cloviness - is that a word?

I had Schlenkerla Lagerbier just the other night. I had forgotten just how utterly outstanding it is.

Pilsners are hoppy, especially Northern German ones. Get Jever if they have it. Weihenstephaner's is also great.

Vitus is amazing, and has more banana than clove.

Wouldnt it be awesome if you could just goto the restaurant and have the server be able to recommend a beer fitting the characteristics youre looking for? Need more beer aficionados as waiters and servers. Get something from Ayinger if they have it. Celebrator is my favorite. Dang, now I want some Celebrator... Delicious malty goodness. *Homer drooling noise*

Krombacher, Diebels Alt, Bitburger, Warsteiner, Veltins...really wish we could get Herforder here in the US.

Was hoping that would be the case, but I wasn't going to hold out thinking I could trust the server. You never know. I have a few plastic rams hanging around my office, but think I prefer Salvator. In general though, German beers just aren't my thing. I should know, I drank enough to get my free stein at the local German restaurant, but it would be extremely rare to find a German beer in my own fridge.

And I lean toward dunkels, but (it's worth repeating) I don't like the clove overtones of many German beers. Aventinus? Pikantus? I know I've enjoyed Warsteiner Dunkel and Salvator in the past, but looking to finally get some German beer knowledge here.

Ooooh free Stein? yes, that sounds like a place I need to visit! Too bad Im so far from Texas. I gotta find a good German restaurant that may offer some kind of cool deal like that. I need a quest such as that to go on, thank you sir! I hope you get a decent beer when you go, if it was closer to Octoberfest, Id say just get any one of those. Spaten makes a good beer, you might want to try one of theirs. Also, I find Lowenbrau and nice treat as well. Love a good Helles.

is this a joke? because right now, after seeing that list, a lot of us BA's are thinking something like "most any beer on the list with more than one syllable is outstanding."

understood that you are typically interested in something big and hoppy, but that just ain't in the German beer lexicon. big malt is out. cloves and banana are out. so to be fair, if that is your criteria, you are missing out on what makes German brew so fantastic.

now is a good time to reconsider.
    Cheers.

Wow - what a list. Anything from Weihenstephaner or Kulmbacher Pils.

So you want hoppy and/or dark, but not malty or banana/clove characters? Given those guidelines I'd recommend the Köstritzer Schwarzbier or Paulaner Pilsener.
