These are all excellant examples of true German flavor. And I could go on and on with more examples. However, my advice is try something locally brewed and offer some insight to the brewer. If you can get 4Shadow or anything from Freetail Brewing Company I think you'll be pleased.

Great list, no bad choices. Start at A, and work your way down the list.

Don't order anything with "hefe," "weiss," or "weizen" in the name. If you stick to that rule and get a beer that tastes of cloves, the server brought you the wrong beer. If everyone insists you got the bock or pils or helles you ordered and you insist it tastes like cloves, you're wrong.

The pilsner. And lucky, I wish we had a good German place here.

Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel is a solid choice for a common German Beer.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I'm an IPA fan so yes I'm lost in the German beer arena, even though I have had most on the list. I landed on the Pinkantus and Aventinus (not the Eisbock, they were out). The Schneider turned out to be a bit too clovy for me. At least I'm back home with a Modus Hoperandi to cleanse my palate! A Founders Centennial may have to serve as a nightcap. ;-)

Franconia is brewed only a few miles from here, but I've not been pleased from what I have sampled so far (cloves again). But then again, as much as I've tried I'm just not a big German beer fan. Everyone has their quirks.

Anything FLENSBURGER. The best German brewery I've personally ever sampled.

Sorry, but these recommendations are awful. It's a list of German BMCs.

I recognize this recommendation is too late (and probably not a beer that the OP would like) but I had Hofbräu Maibock on draft last night at a beer bar local to me. I really enjoyed that beer.

So, I suppose my recommendation is to others: if you see Hofbräu Maibock on tap I would recommend that you buy it!

    Cheers!
