I am going to a specialty beer party tonight and need a good recommendation. I worked in the beer/wine/liquor industry for 6 years and I am familiar with many beers. But I don't like 99.9% of IPAs and it seems that most people in my specialty beer circle love them and the worse they taste (to me) the more they love them.

I need a beer that fits my love of imports (especially brown ales and stouts) with the world of IPA. Any ideas.

FYI I am in Dayton Ohio so local micro brews from out of state are not always available.
Prefer a 6/12pk over pints or 750s but I can work with anything.

So are you asking for a dark import with IPA characteristics?

Best I can think of is some kind of black IPA

For somebody that hates IPA's? Surely you jest, good sir. SN Bigfoot was one of the most brutally bitter beers I've ever tasted.

I'm thinking that by 'world of IPA', the OP means the craft beer 'scene' in general.

Vincent - blow everyone away with an awesome Imperial Stout - barrel aged, if you can find one.

Not necessarily, really just looking for something I can tolerate. While the dark beers are some of my favorites i also enjoy a good lager/ale/pilsner. I just don't care for the IPAs that are pride themselves on bitter hops and turning your face inside-out.

If you can locate Bell's Expedition Stout - that should drum up some enthusiasm. Or if you run with a pales only crowd, maybe pick up some Alaskan Freeride APA?

Not an import, but Lagunitas Somethin' Wild?

Avery New World Porter perhaps? It's a dark beer with plenty of hoppiness to go with it - almost a brown IPA if you will. Or there's fresh Yeti if you're craving an imperial stout with a lot of hoppy characteristics...Unless you are planning on blowing them away with some uber-rare, limited release beers

Sometimes I forget about other people's palate. I thought the bitterness in BigFoot complimented the malt sweetness perfectly. Hein sight, I remember hating Hoptimum. The bitterness on that beer was relentless when I had it after a six month IPA/DIPA hiatus. Maybe some Rouge DeadGuy ale could work.

Stone Sublimely Self Righteous is a great Black IPA. It's definitely hoppy but a good balance with dark malts
