I generally use a corded DeWalt for milling nowadays... relatively cheap and very durable. Used cordless Craftsman and DeWalt in the past but am sometimes negligent about keeping batteries charged (and we don't leave chargers plugged in since one shorted out a few years ago). If you can do without the portability of a cordless, a corded drill offers a lot more bang for the buck, though this is changing as batteries get better and cheaper. BTW, milling by hand is not the worst thing in the world; probably good for us. It doesn't take as long as it feels.

On the home/barn side, we have a DeWalt impact driver with 20V Li-ion batteries that we love - light, powerful and handles a lot of tasks. Drill, charger and 2 batteries was 130 bucks at Lowes. Holds a charge forever in subzero weather, which is a big plus when barn stuff gets broken in winter. Not compatible with my mill but highly recommended for everything else.
