So, I'm currently fermenting NB's Bourbon Barrel Porter. I'm planning to add the bourbon barrel oak cubes as well as whole coffee beans to my fermenter. How many ounces of whole beans would I need for a one gallon batch and how long should I let them sit?
I can't answer your question because I have never used coffee in a beer, but the topic come up often, although I don't know how often for a 1-gallon batch. Maybe your answer will be in one of these threads from a search that I did of thread titles using 'coffee' as the search word: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/search/32215560/?q=coffee&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=8
I like about 2 oz whole coffee beans for 5 gal. So for 1 gal- 0.4 oz. However, you only need to soak them for 2-3 days. Where the oak cubes will need a week or two. So you could add oak 1st, then wait a week or so then add coffee. Or add both at same time, but put coffee in paint strainer bag to remove after couple days.
Update: I cold brewed coffee grounds yesterday afternoon and added the liquid extract to the pot before bottling last night.
