Brooklyn Brewing has expanded it territory very much. Brooklyn Bel Aire sour ale is good example of a good, slightly funky wild ale.

@TongoRad @JackHorzempa thanks for the recommendation about aging Sofie.
I've been buying it since spring, but never thought about saving some for later.

I planned on picking up a six after New Year's, but now I'll buy two; one for 01/20 and one for 01/21.

I was fortunate enough to find a 4 pack of 2017s over Thanksgiving, and they were fantastic. Sometimes you get lucky and the work has already been done for you . So keep an eye out whenever you're shopping.

I did find Sofie, and in fact found a 4 pack bottled in January of 2016. Haven't tried it yet!

Chandeleur Islands in Gulfport MS has a few sours that are pretty decent, and they are available everywhere down here. Lazy Magnolia just released a Gose called Bad Captain, which I just tried tonight, and liked! The Lazy Magnolia Brewery is actually about a 10 minute drive from my house, so availability won't be a problem!

I wear shorts where I want, if I’m sporting a sweatshirt with that so what? If it’s close over 40 I’m wearing shorts. I’m not cold natured, I don't own a winter coat, I just laugh because we’re pushing Jan and guys are bundled up and I’m wearing shorts and T shirt. The guys at work with are always CHILLY, and it 50 degrees, give me a break. If I lived in International Falls I’d have a different outlook, but I live in mid NC.

That's exactly my point. I'm originally from a place that gets very cold and snowy. One of the reasons I live where I do know is, we, very rarely get actual cold/winter. I don't even own any "winter clothes" anymore.

That's what makes it so funny: dude is wearing a big, warm, poofy jacket, over a flannel shirt, and also shorts, tevas, and wool socks. In December, the coldest and wettest month we have, here at sea level, and that dude always sits next to me, while I'm trying to have a nice moment with a companion.

Dude, we get it, you just hiked all weekend, in the wilderness, and you're ready for some civilization. Cool.

Go home and take a quick shower!

You are not impressing us by being stinky!

I do not even own sandals. Big 5 sports always has cheap sneakers on sale (as well as Russian rifles. Da fuq?), so I just wear beater sneakers when I go tubing/canoeing/whatevering

I used to go to a computer conference in LA every December. In the morning it would be in the 50's and get to 70's or 80's'. In the morning I'd show up to the registration tent in shorts and a t-shirt to find the locals in winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. They've apparently never been in real winter weather.

My favorite part of going to big 5 is checking out what vintage rifles they have in stock. I've been thinking about grabbing the mauser they have had here for the last 10 years.

As for wild ales, I think it's funny how people bitch about how expensive they are. Brewing these styles can be cost prohibitive due to the amount of time that goes into mixed culture fermentation. It seems hazy ipa 4x and pastry stouts cost about the same per oz as well. Want cheap beer? Go buy a rack of natty lite.

It gets 50 degree outside, and at work they turn on the fucking heat they wear sweaters, gloves, skull caps. its fucking ridiculous. If it’s cold I wear a sweatshirt and cold for me is under 40. I don’t even own a winter coat just a heavier sweatshirt. I don’t work outside, I walk to my car that’s it. And I don’t shovel the one snow or two we get per year.

Back to the original question, I’d say try almost anything from Prairie Artisan Ales from Oklahoma, they are true masters of Wild/Farmhouse//Brett/Saison Ales.
I loved their Funky Gold series, especially the Mosaic, Simcoe and Citra ones but if you’re looking for something from their staples don’t miss out on their Prairie Flare and Twist or even their Imaginary Friends IPA - they are all terrific, (all my) hands down.

Doesn't it? I don't have much experience with American Wild Ales, but the traditional Belgian Wild Ales I've had always had some sourness to them without exception. It's more the other way around in my experience.

A sour beer is not necessarily going to have any wild, funky notes to it, but if it was truly fermented wildly, there will always be some bacteria in there that that lend a certain sourness or at least mild tartness/acidity to the beer in addition to the funky notes.
