No denying the availability -- just commenting that NM is a poor example of the style... unfortunately. I'd like to see more well made Munich Dunkels, myself, they just aren't terribly prevalent.

Another vote for Hofbrau. It's true to the style & their distro should be pretty big.

How do people rate Trader Joes take on the style? It's the only Dunkelweizen I've had, and I was really impressed with it.

First of all, Dunkelweizen and Munich Dunkel (of which the OP is looking for examples) are 2 completely different types of beer (as discussed above).

And as much as I like the Gordon Biersh-brewed beers for Trader Joe's, I wasn't a huge fan of their Dunkelweizen -- seemed sort of lacking compared with some other imports available. Who knows, I may have had old stock and I should try it again.

I've seen Brown Hound in stores, maybe call around and ask. Any good beer and wine shop might have it. There is a good chance that Hollywood Market in Royal Oak would have it. You might try Bellaire Brown Ale from Short's or Bonfire Brown from Saugatuck as a substitute.

Sly Fox Dunkel is a seasonal (fall/winter) and I only had it on draft last fall at the Brewpub. The bartender told me that they did not can the Dunkel last year (because of poor sales?).

    Cheers!

Yeah, it would seem that "Euro Dark Lager" would be the most appropriate BA style listing.

We have precious few choices here, so looking to other worlds is what we have to do sometimes .

Beck's Dark is readily available and of pretty poor quality, but it'll give you a frame of reference for the rest.

Well the BA categorization is consistent with what the importer of the beer calls it.

Not sure how extensive Lakefront's distro to Michigan is but their Eastside Dark is pretty good

For the price point, Trader Joe's puts out some quality brew. I agree with you on Dunkelweizen, and the Hefeweizen is decent as well. Get your hands on an Ayinger Ur-Weisse...you won't regret it!

Thank you all so very much for your responses and for all of the information you have given to me. I will try to hunt these down and see what I can come up with. You have all given me a lot to look into, I'm really excited to learn this much about it and (for the ones not available in MI) I now also have a list of what to try when I travel around!
