Need help in finding an IPA with only 4 ingredients. I'm finding that the IPAs available for me locally are adding Wheat & Oats. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Getting thirsty here.

Hopefully some Canadian BAs will chime into this thread.

Can you obtain Central City Brewing (located in British Columbia) beers where you live? I have in the past enjoyed drinking their IPA (branded as Red Racer IPA in Canada). That beer is only brewed with Barley Malt:

    “MALTS

UK Maris Otter, Superior Pale Malt, Carastan Crystal Malt”

    Cheers

Do you get Sierra Nevada's Torpedo up there?

Bell's Two Hearted may be another option. I know it's brewed up north, but IDK if it makes its way across the international border.

Where in Ontario are living? And, what style of IPAs do you prefer? I should be able to make a couple suggestions.

I'm in Southern Ontario in a small town Hagersville.

At this time, I'm purchasing Bone Shaker contains wheat (Amsterdam brewery), Voodoo Ranger (Brewed by Steam Whistle) it states "contains "barley" but offers no other ingredients. I prefer a high IBU ale. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. I have purchased Red Racer when it is available in our LCBO stores and rarely has it in stock. I'll check out where, it may be available. I'll certainly keep that brand in mind now.

Thank you for this. Our LCBO stores are not supplying us with many choices now. I'll check it out

    Have you considered homebrewing?

Just yesterday I bottled a batch of Ekuanot IPA which just so happens is all malt (i.e., barley malt).

As I understand it in Ontario you have limited selection at the state owned beer retailer (and prices are high?). If you make your own beer there is no worries about beer availability (and you might save quite a bit of money?).

    Cheers!

Let me do a little checking. I’ve had some nice West coast inspired IPAs lately with a good piney quality and some bitterness from some Toronto brewers. But, in each case they contained oats. I have a couple in mind and will get back to you when I can confirm.

Plenty of regular 'West Coast' IPA available on....the West Coast

Just had a pretty darn good Fat Tug. Red Racer is kind of dead to beer nerds out here now, yet people like the alcohol free stuff they do lol. Happiness from Superflux is a regular. Lots of batch variation on them all, which is likely down to hops. Brassneck makes a few. Heck every brewery out here is making a 'regular' IPA again finally, not that most stopped, but they're getting more hype again. Haze is fine, but way too many bad ones.

    @Roger75

If you are willing to absorb a little extra cost for the shipping, Rainhard Kapow is a good throwback bitter IPA. I’m almost certain there are no oats or wheat in the recipe.

Also, Left Field has West Coast Swing which is similar.

I had something from Common Good recently as well that reminded me of an old fashioned west coaster. I am not seeing it on their shop page at the moment though.

    Both ship province-wide.

I generally don’t shop at the LCBO myself, and tend to stick to local GTA breweries. I had a quick look at the LCBO inventory ( I hate their website) but didn’t see anything I would recommend.

Thank you Jack for that info. Yes, our Province (Ontario) has what they call the LCBO, (Liquor Control Board Ontario). They get to chose what they offer. Some outlets are very good while most cater to the Bud Light group lol. The cost isn't too bad but I don't mind paying for quality. I'm a bit old now to try and start up my own brewing. Did in the past but now, at 75, I no longer have the space required and all of my equipment has been given away..

A note on my very unpleasant experience Saturday the 30th. I thought I had found the IPA have been searching for at a brewery approximately 1 hour from my home in Kitchener ON. The brewery in question, StockYards. I emailed a "Sean" at the brewery and he assured my he had two ales which meet the Reinheitsgebot. We sat at the bar and I samples the two. Very good quality brews but upon inspection if the "ingredients", they both contain "OATS". I'm very upset.

We have something similar in Pennsylvania, the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board). If you want liquor you have to purchase it from the state owned stores (they were labeled as State Store when I was a kid). Beer was always separate but in the past (10ish years ago) the primary retailer was a store called a Beer Distributor and by law you had to purchase by the case (24 bottles/cans). Things have improved over the past few years in that there are more beer retailers (e.g., supermarket sales) and you can buy beer by the single bottle and six-packs.
I am sorry to hear about that experience.

And I am sorry to hear that homebrewing is not an option for you. One thing to keep in mind is that you can brew in smaller quantities (some folks will brew 1 gallon batches) and people who live in small apartments will homebrew as well.

Here is a video that discusses brewing using the Mr. Beer fermenter which is a little over 2 gallons:

    Cheers!

Thank you muchly for this Jack. Question if I may; How does beer produced (home brewed) from Malt extract compare to malting your own malt. I know the home malting is preferred by many but in your opinion is it worth the effort?

Another possibility is Granite’s IPA. Again, I believe they deliver province wide.

Brewing from malt extract will produce high quality beers.

The advantages of brewing all grain is that it is cheaper from an ingredient cost perspective. Plus some homebrewers like the fact that you can control/tweak the fermentability of the wort via mash temperature selection.

I would encourage you to brew using malt extract.

    Cheers!

I too am a BIG fan of the Threes Stooges!

Shemp's beer is actually a stage beer for the TV series The Evil Dead:

Many thanks Jack. Do you think there would be any benefit if I boil the extract to
"break" or has it already been processed like that? Its been a long time since I made beer but I recall that when a malt is boiled long enough , the proteins break which is evident when you can see the solids separation.
