    Hey everyone,

I am new here and I need help identifying an incredible barley wine I drank 3, 4 years ago. My local beer shop recommended it to me, but it has closed since.

I don't remember the name (otherwise it wouldn't be funny...)

What I am sure of: It had a red label with the silhouette of a boy on a horse. At the time, I thought of him as a native / indigenous boy so, as he was only a black shape, maybe he had a spear or a bow or something.

What I am not sure of: I think it was one of those small fat bottles, and I think it was an american barley wine.

Does it sound familiar to anyone ?

Stay safe and drink good beer.

OP, it would likely help if you mentioned where you are located as it might have been a local brewery.

The only label that sounds like is The Cowboy from Asheville Brewing - I don't think that's a barleywine though.

Barleywines that I know have horses: Cape May - Sawyer's Swap, Adnams - Tally-Ho, Back Road - No.9,

Barleywines I know that have a native on it: Horus - Barleywine.

Hey, at the very least, I've ruled out five. Sounds quite frustrating. Good luck!

Edit: Google image these, don't look them up here, OP - the labels are different.

Also - native? On a horse? Red label? No chance it's this, is it? https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10541/34982/

Hey everyone, thank you for your quick replies !

You are right Jaycase, I should have said where I'm from right away. I am located in Bordeaux (France). I really don't think it was a French beer, though. But we shouldn't rule anything out since I am not 100% sure it was an american beer. Maybe it was only an american yeast.

Impressive answer, SierraNevallagash, thank you ! Unfortunately, none of them match. I am positive it was not a cowboy on the label. Just the black silhouette of an indigenous boy. He must have had a bow, or a spear, or maybe a headband... something that made me think of a native back then.

I am currently browsing through my photos of that time period in hopes to find a picture of someone drinking it somewhere in the background... I will let you know if I find anything.

Thanks again for you help !

The character on the label isn't a match, but in case you are misremembering some of the details - Great Divide Old Ruffian is an American barley wine with a red label with a dark silhouette of a man on it. Here's an image:

Perhaps there's even a chance you saw the above beer with their Orabelle and have combined the two in your head. No horse though. Here's that label:

    Maybe @Shanex has an idea.

Could you post an example of ‘the small fat bottle’ style either as a picture, or by reference to another beer that uses the same? It might help to place the beer geographically. A lot of US barleywines are in larger format bottles so it might really narrow things down.

Ah, I can’t help with the OP request at all, @zid because at the risk of upsetting the community, Barleywines as a style are something I steer clear of... not my thing.

    Désolé...

Maybe one of the older Pilgrim's Dole labels?
